Verizon has multiple unlimited plans to choose from, but after taking a closer look at them, that unlimited marketing comes with a couple of catches. Across the entire wireless spectrum, carriers are notorious for imposing soft data caps on ‘unlimited’ plans. After people use a certain amount of data every month, their data access is prioritized less and they’re more subject to speed throttling. It’s a lesser-known tactic that all three major wireless providers implement one way or another, including Verizon.
Not considering these data caps, Verizon’s current lineup of unlimited plans is quite impressive. There are four plans ranging from $70 – $90/month for one line of service, 5G is included for free, and many of them come with free subscriptions for Apple Music, Disney+, etc. Verizon’s plans are on the more expensive side of things than other options out there, but when all of those features are combined with Verizon’s excellent coverage across the U.S., there’s a lot to like.
Unfortunately, all four of the plans come with some restrictions on their unlimited data. For the Play More Unlimited, Do More Unlimited, and Get More Unlimited plans, each one comes with 50GB of Premium Network Access. So long as someone stays under that 50GB limit each month, their LTE/5G speeds will run at their full potential. If someone goes over that 50GB allotment in a single month, Verizon says, “In times of congestion, your data may be temporarily slower than other traffic after exceeding 50GB/month/line.” In other words, once that 50GB limit is reached, people’s data will become slower when Verizon’s network is busy. In regards to Start Unlimited, Verizon’s cheapest unlimited plan, things get even trickier. Start Unlimited doesn’t come with any Premium Network Access at all. Subscribers of that plan are constantly subject to having their data throttled — possibly resulting in slower speeds than the three other unlimited plans. People can still use their data as much as they want without worrying about overage charges, but the quality of that data will vary significantly.
Other Ways Verizon Unlimited Isn’t Really Unlimited
In addition to their being caps on regular data access, Verizon also has speed throttles for its hotspot feature. Play More, Do More, and Get More Unlimited all come with ‘unlimited’ mobile hotspot, but once again, speeds are lowered after using a certain amount of that unlimited data. For Play More Unlimited and Do More Unlimited, subscribers get 15GB of 5G/LTE speeds when using their phone’s hotspot. Once those 15GB have been used, speeds are reduced to a measly 600 Kbps for the remainder of the month. Get More Unlimited ups the 5G/LTE hotspot speeds to 30GB, but once again, speeds go down to 600 Kbps after that cap has been met.
As mentioned at the beginning of this article, speed caps are a very common thing in the wireless space. Verizon has them, AT&T does too, and so does T-Mobile. Verizon isn’t doing anything nefarious that its competitors aren’t, but it’s still important to keep this information in mind before signing up for a certain plan. Do ample research, think about how much data access is really needed in a given month, and decide from there.
