In the wake of George Floyd’s murder by police officers, many video game companies have publicly displayed their support for the movement for racial equality and justice. One of the most successful and, perhaps, meaningful displays of support comes from Itch.io, whose “Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality” has raised over $4 million so far.

The bundle includes 1,429 games, including Overland, Night in the Woods, Celeste, and OneShot. Although the minimum price is $5, it’s based on a pay-what-you-want model. Neither Itch.io nor any of the creators who donated their games to the bundle will receive any profits. Instead, it will all go directly to nonprofits supporting racial equality and justice.

The goal is to reach $5 million, half of which will go to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund while the remainder will go to the Community Bail Fund. More games may be added to the bundle before the deal ends on June 15, but the minimum price will remain $5 for all.

The “Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality” may be considered one of the most impactful demonstrations of support from a video game company thus far. Not only does it encourage those who would normally remain silent to join the cause, but it also demonstrates exactly what companies should do if they truly care about something.

Many companies have been issuing vague statements about “recent events” and inequality, which serve only to uphold their image. Epic Games, for example, was recently criticized for doing just that, with people on Twitter claiming their statement sounds as though it was ripped from a corporate template.

Itch.io, by contrast, explicitly states they support black people who “live in a time of racial injustice, inequality, and police brutality.” Moreover, the selflessness of Itch.io and the creators who added their games to the bundle (without any monetary incentive) exemplify the difference between companies that are truly invested in a cause, and those that only seek to satisfy their PR requirements.

“I think it’s extremely important to look for ways to be impactful while something so terrible is going on,” Itch.io creator, Leaf Corcoran, said in an email with Polygon. “A black square on social media isn’t going to cut it. I wanted to find a way to use what we’ve built to do something that would really make a difference.”
