Although there were seven episodes before he came along, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia didn’t really become the show that fans know and love today until Danny DeVito joined the cast in the role of Frank Reynolds. DeVito shares terrific on-screen chemistry with all his co-stars, but particularly Charlie Day, whose character Charlie Kelly shares a bed with Frank.

In their spare time, Frank and Charlie like to boil denim and explore the sewers, naked. In the show, they often rope each other into their zany schemes. From getting married to sleeping in a dumpster, these are Frank and Charlie’s best Always Sunny storylines.

10 Frank’s Back In Business (Season 8, Episode 7)

When Frank’s old company hits hard financial times, they call upon Frank – or, more specifically, his ruthless business persona “The Warthog” – to return to the office in season 8’s “Frank’s Back in Business.”

Much like Michael Douglas took ambitious young Charlie Sheen under his wing in Oliver Stone’s Wall Street, Frank takes Charlie under his wing as a protégé. However, he quickly finds that his possible son doesn’t have much business know-how.

9 Who Pooped The Bed? (Season 4, Episode 7)

A mysterious poop appears in Frank and Charlie’s bed in season 4’s “Who Pooped the Bed?” and Mac and Dennis are determined to get to the bottom of it.

It’s certainly a juvenile premise, but the hilarity of the episode comes from its style. It frames the mystery of the bed poop like an Agatha Christie murder mystery.

8 The Gang Gets Invincible (Season 3, Episode 2)

While Mac, Dennis, and Dee are trying out for the Philadelphia Eagles in season 3’s “The Gang Gets Invincible,” Frank and Charlie hang back with the tailgaters.

Charlie’s plan is to just sit back, relax, and drink beer all day, but his plans quickly change when he realizes Frank has laced his first beer with LSD.

7 The Gang Dines Out (Season 8, Episode 9)

The power dynamic of the Gang is laid bare in season 8’s “The Gang Dines Out.” Frank and Charlie’s dinner reservation at Gugino’s happens to coincide with that of Mac and Dennis, and they spend the whole episode deciding who’s going to “pay tribute” to the other table.

While Mac and Charlie catching each other’s eye across the restaurant is the episode’s greatest moment, fans always get a kick out of Frank wearing a toupee.

6 Mac & Dennis Break Up (Season 5, Episode 9)

When Dee points out that Mac and Dennis have a co-dependent relationship, they decide to take a break from each other in season 5’s “Mac & Dennis Break Up.” Mac moves in with Frank and Charlie and instantly drives them up the wall with his bossiness.

Frank refuses to stop cutting his toenails with a steak knife or sharing a bed with Charlie. This episode revealed that Frank and Charlie refer to themselves as the “Gruesome Twosome.”

5 The Gang Goes To A Water Park (Season 12, Episode 2)

Season 12’s “The Gang Goes to a Water Park” is one of the show’s all-time funniest episodes, as everybody has a hilarious storyline. Mac and Dee are stuck in a slide with a bunch of kids and Dennis takes on a protégé in the art of swindling.

Meanwhile, Frank and Charlie are determined to ride all the rides before they leave, so they fake a terminal illness to skip all the lines. They even want to ride the new Thunder Gun ride that isn’t open yet. They pour a bottle of water down the slide, thinking it’ll suffice, and then Frank promptly cuts up his back sliding down the slide.

4 Frank’s Pretty Woman (Season 7, Episode 1)

Frank wants to marry his favorite sex worker in the season 7 premiere, “Frank’s Pretty Woman,” so Charlie tries to prove to his sleeping partner that he’s capable of finding love based on his own merits (of which he has very few).

While Charlie has sweet intentions in trying to raise Frank’s self-worth, he goes about it horribly. He advises Frank to disguise himself as Charlie’s limo driver, then Charlie will fake an illness and duck out of the date, allowing Frank to swoop in as Prince Charming. The idea is sound, but to fake the illness, Charlie swallows a bunch of blood capsules, which he then vomits all over his horrified date.

3 Mac Fights Gay Marriage (Season 6, Episode 1)

In the season 6 premiere, “Mac Fights Gay Marriage,” Dennis decides to settle down and gets in touch with his old high school girlfriend, Maureen Ponderosa. Dennis marries her impulsively and grows to regret it almost instantly.

Meanwhile, instead of continuing to crack each other’s backs because Charlie can’t afford a chiropractor, Frank and Charlie get married for the government benefits. They soon fall into the same pitfalls as many married couples.

2 Dennis Gets Divorced (Season 6, Episode 2)

Just as Dennis’ marriage comes to an unceremonious end one episode later, so does Frank and Charlie’s. After realizing they were happier before they got married, they decide to go back to the old arrangement.

Uncle Jack handles their divorce proceedings, resulting in one of the episode’s funniest scenes as Frank and Charlie bicker over who will get “a series of drawings of elephants.”

1 The Gang Finds A Dumpster Baby (Season 3, Episode 1)

While Mac and Dee are trying to turn the titular dumpster baby into a star in the season 3 premiere, “The Gang Finds a Dumpster Baby,” Charlie and Frank become dumpster divers.

They fill their apartment with “treasures” they’ve recovered from dumpsters, then end up sleeping in a dumpster when they run out of space in their apartment (instead of just putting the trash back in the trash). This episode provided one of the early hints that Frank could be involved in Charlie’s mysterious parentage.
