Vikings Why Ragnar & Lagerthas Marriage Ended So Early

Ragnar and Lagertha were the lead couple of Vikings during its first episodes, but their marriage didn’t last long, leaving fans feeling it ended too soon, but series creator Michael Hirst knew it had to happen that way. Vikings premiered on History Channel in 2013 and was originally planned to be a miniseries, but the success of season 1 made it possible to keep going. Vikings fans are now waiting for the final episodes to arrive, as the show is coming to an end after six seasons.

Vikings initially followed the travels and raids of legendary Norse figure Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) alongside his Viking brothers, from the Lindisfarne raid (shown in season 1), onward. As the story progressed and more characters were introduced, Vikings shifted its focus to Ragnar’s sons and their own journeys, becoming the leads of the series after Ragnar’s death in season 4. Ragnar didn’t make it to the final season, but his first wife, Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) did. Lagertha became one of the most popular and beloved characters in the series, and she was killed by Hvitserk, one of Ragnar’s sons, in season 6A.

With Vikings nearing its end, fans are looking back at everything that has happened in the series so far, including the marriage of Ragnar and Lagertha. Together they had two children – Gyda and Bjorn Ironside – and lived on a farm, and looked like a pretty normal family. Sadly, the happy marriage of Ragnar and Lagertha didn’t last long in the series, and near the end of season 1, Ragnar met Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) and cheated on Lagertha with her, resulting in Aslaug’s pregnancy. After Ragnar decided to take her as his second wife, Lagertha left Kattegat with Bjorn, leaving Aslaug and Ragnar alone to form their own family. Lagertha’s departure marked the end of their marriage, which viewers felt ended too soon, but for Hirst, it was something inevitable for various reasons.

Speaking to CinemaBlend in July 2020, Hirst defended ending Ragnar and Lagertha’s marriage in season 2, explaining that the starting point of the series was Ragnar the young farmer and father frustrated by his lack of opportunity to sail and explore other lands. Hirst continued explaining that once his ambitions began to play out, they also came with a price, which in this case was his family. Hirst added that he “couldn’t have spent more time” with Ragnar and Lagertha because by the time the series began, their “domestic and rural idyll” was already over, and it only needed a little push to finally break – and that external force was Ragnar’s travels and other projects. Ragnar and Lagertha never really stopped caring for each other and joined forces a couple of times after their marriage ended, and Lagertha reunited with him in Valhalla when she passed away.

Ragnar and Lagertha’s marriage wasn’t meant to last long, and while they were a fan-favorite couple that the audience would have loved to see more of, the end of their marriage made way for pretty much the rest of the series, as Ragnar and Aslaug had four sons, who became the moving force of Vikings, especially Ivar the Boneless. Perhaps Ragnar and Lagertha were meant to be together, as seen when they reunited in Valhalla, but there were many events and people that crossed their paths and ultimately pushed them apart.
