Ever since turning heads and winning hearts as Ronnie, the moral center of her feature debut Menace II Society in 1993, Jada Pinkett Smith has gone to become one of the most well-respected actors of her time. After making one movie in 2019, Angel Has Fallen, news recently came down that Pinkett is set to reprise her iconic role as Niobe in The Matrix 4. Sadly, COVID-19 has shut down the production of the film for the foreseeable future.

10 Ali (2001) 67%

Art imitates life in Michael Mann’s reverential biopic Ali, in which Will and Jada Smith play a married couple, boxer Cassius Clay and ex-Playboy Bunny Sonji Roi.

The sweeping life story of arguably the greatest athlete in history follows Ali’s battles in and outside of the ring as the world’s undisputed heavyweight boxing champion. As he pulverizes his opponents in the ring, he takes blows outside as a conscientious Vietnam War objector and an affiliate of the controversial Malcolm X.

9 Return To Paradise (1998) 71%

In the vein of Midnight Express, two major drug-smuggling movies were released in 1998 and 1999: Return to Paradise and Brokedown Palace.

In the former, Joaquin Phoenix, Vince Vaughn, and David Conrad play a trio of friends living it up in Malaysia. After hard partying, the three go their separate ways. But when a lawyer (Anne Heche) tracks the trio down and informs them that large quantities of hashish are found during a police raid of their compound, all are put in dire legal jeopardy.

8 The Matrix Reloaded (2003) 73%

It’s now common knowledge that Jada’s hubby, Big Willy Smith, was nearly cast as Neo in The Matrix, a role that ultimately went to Keanu Reeves. Well, four years later, Jada got the last laugh!

Indeed, Jada threw her name into The Matrix ring via Reloaded and Revolutions, the second and third legs of the blockbuster Wachowski trilogy. She plays Niobe in the films, a human form Zion who rebels in the longstanding battle between the Matrix and the Machines. Here’s hoping she officially returns in part 4!

7 Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted (2012) 79%

Pinkett Smith hasn’t shied away from lending her voice to family-friendly animated features during her three-decade career. From 2004-2012, she reprised the role of Gloria thrice in the Madagascar trilogy.

For our purposes, however, the one that ranks highest according to RT is Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted. Plot-wise, the third chapter concerns the African animals on a sojourn to Europe, where they join a rinky-dink circus in order to return to New York. Their primary foe? A wicked Animal Control agent out for blood!

6 Scream 2 (1997) 82%

Here’s a very cool piece of trivia for all you horror fans. The opening of Scream 2, in which Jada Pinkett Smith is savagely slaughtered before a packed movie theater, was lifted directly from the opening of the 1980 slasher film He Knows You’re Alone, starring Tom Hanks. Learn something every day, ay?!

Scream 2 finds Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) at college, where a new skein of copycat murders rekindle the horrors of Woodsboro from a year earlier. The conceit of having multiple killers holds true, a real coup for the genre.

5 Menace II Society (1993) 84%

In the Hughes Brothers’ searingly gritty tale of urban street-crime in Menace II Society, Jada Pinkett Smith exudes the strength, heart, and moral compass of the entire piece. A hell of a feat for her first feature!

The movie follows the criminal exploits of Kane, an Los Angeles gang-banger and street hustler doing whatever necessary to survive. With gang violence at every turn, drugs, and 40s in every hand next to a pistol, Ronnie (Pinkett Smith) is the only one able to get through to Kane and knock some sense into him. Fantastic debut performance!

4 Collateral (2004) 86%

In Michael Mann’s skillfully directed crime saga, Jamie Foxx goes toe-to-toe with Tom Cruise, a wily hitman with more tricks up his sleeve than Penn and Teller. In the end, however, it’s Foxx’s unassuming cabbie Max that saves the life of his good friend Annie (Pinkett Smith) from the ruthless assassin.

Pay close attention to the dialogue in the film. Early on, Max mentions how he “got lucky with the lights” when Vincent praises him for getting across town in time. Well, lights are precisely what saves Max’s life during the final showdown on a train. Brilliant!

3 If These Walls Could Talk (1996) 88%

If These Walls Could Talk is a little known but star-studded TV movie co-directed by Cher (pictured) and Nancy Savoca. The three-part anthology chronicles the evolution of medical abortion as seen in 1952, 1974, and 1996.

Pinkett Smith plays a woman named Patti in the 1996 segment, co-starring with Cher, Anne Heche, Rita Wilson, Craig T. Nelson, and several others. By that time in history, Roe V. Wade has been upheld as the land of the law, which marks a far cry from how abortion was perceived in 1952.

2 Girls Trip (2017) 91%

Girls Trip proved to be the surprise breakout comedy of 2017, thanks in large part to Tiffany Haddish’s coming out party. However, without the uptight Lisa (Pinkett Smith) to balance the wackiness, the results would likely pale.

You know the deal. When the “Flossy Posse” foursome reunites after years apart, they make the most of it with a swanky New Orleans female-only vacation. Hijinks of the highest order ensue, including a wild trip on Absinthe, zip-line urination, sexual grapefruiting, and a whole lot of laughs!

1 Princess Mononoke (1997) 93%

Prior to lending her voice to the Madagascar franchise, Pinkett Smith worked out her vocal cords as Toki in the 1997 English-language translation of Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke.

Directed by the undisputed king of Japanese animation, Hayao Miyazaki, the story tracks Ashitaka, a noble young warrior who is cursed upon protecting his land from a demon. As a result, Ashitaka sets out to the forest to find a cure, where he meets Princess Mononoke, a gallant young girl raised by a wolf-god.
