David Klein, the inventor of Jelly Belly jelly beans, has announced a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-style contest to win a candy factory. The classic tale of the reclusive Willy Wonka, an aging chocolate factory owner who decides to run a global contest to give over control of his factory to one deserving child, was published in 1964. Written by prolific children’s author, and the reported inspiration for James Bond, Roald Dahl, the novel has captivated millions of readers over the past 50 years and been adapted into a movie twice.

The 1971 adaptation starred comic Gene Wilder, who gave an eccentric and charming performance as the chocolate factory owner. That movie is considered a classic, and often runs on British and American TV during the holidays. Tim Burton’s 2005 remake, starring Johnny Depp, was less well-received, thanks to its creepy overtones, but was still a success. The film’s central premise, of a candy company owner giving over control of their factory to a randomly selected member of the public via a golden ticket lottery has long been considered the height of fantasy, but that’s about to change.

According to ABC, David Klein, who invented Jelly Belly jelly beans, has announced that he will run a similar competition to give away one of his candy factories, located in Florida, to a lucky winner. The golden ticket competition, run by the former owner of Jelly Belly candy company, will see tickets hidden in various states around the USA, with cash prizes up for grabs, as well as the grand prize of the keys to the Candyman Kitchens factory in Florida. We are going to have the ultimate treasure hunt where the winner will be receiving a key to one of our candy factories. The world needs this right now, we have received thousands of comments from people who say this has come at such a perfect time. Each treasure hunt has a strict limit of 1,000 participants.

Klein has clearly learned from the original story, though, as he’s limiting entrants to 1,000 per state and will make participants pay $50 to enter. Hopefully he doesn’t also have a secret workforce of slaves who cart away naughty children when they fail to follow the rules. It seems unlikely. Nevertheless, the contest has captured the attention of the country and has gone viral, leading to the website for the treasure hunt to be down as of the time of writing.

The contest follows a recent resurgence in interest in the works of Dahl, with news that Robert Zemeckis is remaking a movie version of Dahl’s The Witches, in addition to Netflix’s plans for a pair of series based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which will be directed by Taika Waititi. Clearly Klein is hoping to be known as a real-life Willy Wonka, though it’s doubtful the candy-lover who wins his Florida factory will be a child, like the titular hero in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
