Jersey Shore: 5 Moments That Are Still Entertaining (& 5 That Aged Very Poorly)

Jersey Shore is a controversial reality tv show that is both hilarious and awkward. There are plenty of memorable moments, but some have aged poorly.

The genre of reality tv can be divided into two distinct templates–competitive (Survivor, The Amazing Race), and fly-on-the-wall (The Real World, The Real Housewives of ___).

In the latter category, there is perhaps no other show that has been so loathed and beloved than Jersey Shore. The MTV surprise hit took off in 2009 as it followed the lives of six people as they vacationed in Seaside Heights. The show, certainly a product of its time, has its fair share of timeless moments and dated moments; here are the top five of each.

10 Aged Very Poorly: Mike’s Unzipped Rant

Season 5 of the show largely drew most of its drama from Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino’s sulking spells as he oscillated between trying to sabotage “Snooki’s” relationship, and long-winded laments about being cast into the role of the show’s villain. In hindsight, it’s obvious the man was going through some personal struggles, which reaches its apex in a scene mid-season when Sorrentino takes to ranting and raving at the women in the house while completely oblivious to the fact that his fly is unzipped and he is exposing himself to them and the camera. It’s not a good look for anyone.

9 Still Entertaining: Mike V. The Wall

Almost too absurd to behold when it aired years ago, and still almost too absurd to behold now, the infamous argument between Mike and Ronnie in Italy reached a fever pitch and it looked like the two were finally going to come to blows after seasons of tension between them. That is until Mike decided to…hype himself up or something by ramming his head straight into a concrete wall. The rest of the crew stares in astonishment as he stumbles around and passes out, before briefly resurrecting just long enough to let Ronnie swing on him.

8 Aged Poorly: Karaoke

The show’s sixth and final season saw The Situation return as a new man, fresh out of rehab for drug and alcohol addiction. However, the rest of the season focused and exploited in some cases, his struggle to remain clean in an environment ensconced in liquor and debauchery.

What makes the whole arc cringy is the way his housemates act in light of the new regiment. The most awkward example of this naive attitude comes when they secretly sign him up at a karaoke night to perform Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab,” something he clearly doesn’t want to do.

7 Still Entertaining: Mike V. Pauly V. Angelina

The second season moved the gang from Jersey to Miami, another town known for its antics and nightlife. The result was another helping of drama, catchphrases, drama, booze, tanning, and drama. However, it was Angelina’s return that stirred the most pots, including the typically drama-free Pauly D. A Shore moment that has gone onto meme infamy, Pauly finally lost it after returning from a frustrating night out with Mike and Angelina, who drunkenly proceeded to berate and slap him on the face. This outburst led to Mike and Pauly both losing their tempers at Angelina, a sequence that is still glorious to endure.

6 Aged Poorly: Mike Sabotaging Pauly…Twice

On the flip side of the previous entry, there was a Miami exchange between Mike, Pauly, and a series of random women they picked up at a bar wherein Mike became irate when the women he chose wouldn’t sleep with him immediately and thus began to bully them out the door. This behavior struck a nerve with Pauly who became frustrated when his girls decided to leave with their friends. Mike’s callous playground jealousy, coupled with some really cruel jabs at people he didn’t even know, makes this moment genuinely hard to watch.

5 Still Entertaining: “Where’s The Beach?!”

Arguably the most iconic, and derided, moment in the entire show came when the show’s unofficial mascot “Snooki” took a day to herself to get absolutely smash drunk and belligerently wander up and down the boardwalk screaming “where’s the beach?”. The funniest part of the whole thing comes when she approaches an elderly man on a bench who seems confused and gently points behind him to the massive beach, “right there.” For better or worse, it showed that the series was designed to allow viewers to laugh at these subjects while also being empathetic and finding them endearing.

4 Aged Poorly: Atlantic City Dinner

While this episode proved in some ways that the crew could be in a different location and still cause their signature shenanigans, the entire thing is steeped in two of the ickiest moments in the show. Unfortunately, Mike plays a big part in both moments. The worst of the two, by far, comes when everyone is trading barbs and roasts at dinner, which comes to an abrupt halt when Mike insults Snooki’s weight. It’s another instance of Mike making himself look as bad as possible, and it’s only gotten worse with time.

3 Still Entertaining: The Origins Of The Note

Jersey Shore 5 Moments That Are Still Entertaining (& 5 That Aged Very Poorly)

Much of the show’s romantic-tinged nonsense drama came from Ronnie and Samantha, two people who could never decide if they were together or not. Arguably the only time this “storyline” was remotely interesting is when Ronnie began his campaign of club creeping behind Sam’s back in Miami. By the end of the first week, everyone but Sam knew of Ronnie’s creeps. So, in an attempt to be sneaky and loyal to both people, Jenni and Nicole write a note. The note was very clearly written by them and it managed to be the conduit to the show’s biggest fights.

2 Aged Poorly: Ron, Sam, And The Jerk On The Boardwalk

Jersey Shore 5 Moments That Are Still Entertaining (& 5 That Aged Very Poorly)

This sequence from the first season is the culmination of why so many people hated this show and mocked it endlessly. Indeed, the initial argument between Ronnie and Sam seems par for the course until a drunk attention-seeker starts trying to bait Ron into a fight. To his credit, Ron tries to ignore it, but Sam relentlessly taunts back until Ronnie pushes her off and away from him and begins to beat the hell out of the tourist, while his girlfriend hits Ronnie. It’s all so trashy and in poor taste, and Ron’s handling of the situation proves they were kids just being baited into ratings-based drama.

1 Still Entertaining: Pauly D. (Pick A Catchphrase)

Perhaps it is cheating to put Pauly D. himself in the top spot but it is Pauly D., and the situations and sense of fun that he brings out of the other housemates, that serve as the best reason to still watch Jersey Shore. His many catchphrases such as “Cabs are here!” and “T-shirt tiiiiiime” are as silly as they are catchy and fun. The man clearly doesn’t take the show as seriously as some of his peers and it’s all the better for it. A genuinely fun personality to watch, his moments are the glue of the show’s success and cultural invasion.
