The 2014 cult hit B-movie John Wick not only served to remind the filmgoing masses that Keanu Reeves is a bonafide action movie star, it also made bigger names of its directors: longtime stunt experts and second unit directors-turned filmmakers, David Leitch and Chad Stahelski. Both of those directors have since landed even bigger jobs, working on other well-established franchises. However, well before any of their future projects hit theaters, the sequel John Wick: Chapter Two will arrive on the scene.

Scripted again by John Wick screenwriter Derek Kolstad and solo directed by Stahelski, Chapter Two picks up with John (Reeves) four days after the first movie. John has gotten a new puppy and is ready to properly settle into a life of retirement now, only to be called back into action by The Bowler King (Laurence Fishburne), a fellow whom John owes a blood debt to. The Bowler King needs John’s help with taking control of a powerful international assassins’ guild – in turn requiring Mr. Wick to take a “vacation” to Rome, as the new trailer for the sequel illustrates.

John Wick: Chapter Two aims to deliver even more tightly-choreographed fight sequences and stylish set pieces than its predecessor did – and if the the trailers released for the film to date are any indication, it will succeed at doing just that. The sequel will also further explore the underworld of assassins and killers-for-hire established in the first movie, in turn opening the door wider for a potential John Wick 3 (should the sequel perform well enough to justify it). Among the foes that John faces in the John Wick sequel are new assassins played by Common and Ruby Rose. The former thankfully appears to be channeling the memorable hitman that he played in Run All Night in the new trailer for John Wick: Chapter Two, whereas the latter – who also joins the Resident Evil and Pitch Perfect franchises in addition to John Wick, next year – communicates in sign language in the new trailer, suggesting she herself is a mute. Rose’s character, in particular, could make for a clever variation on the archetypical “silent killer” in the John Wick sequel, for related reasons. Also worth mentioning: John’s dog at least survives this trailer, as it’s shown safe alongside John after his house is blown up here.

Should it succeed in delivering even more impressive “Hong Kong-style” (read: longer takes and less editing) action sequences, fun world-building and B-movie thrills/drama than its predecessor, one imagines that John Wick: Chapter Two won’t mark the end of the John Wick franchise on the big screen. Although Leitch is now working on Deadpool 2 and Stahelski is attached to helm the Highlander franchise reboot, the two should be more than willing to re-team with Reeves for a third time and finish the John Wick trilogy on a strong note – again, assuming that Chapter Two lives up to expectations.
