When people think about scary characters within movies they often go to classic horror movies with the likes of Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger. However, some of the scariest characters in film history actually belong to children’s movies that are supposed to be for the entire family to have fun with.

Children’s movies often have villains involved to try and tell a compelling story of good vs. evil, giving them someone to root for and go against. But many of the villains within these movies actually happen to be incredibly scary that seem like they would terrify younger viewers while also scaring adults at the same time.

10 The Other Mother (Coraline)

Coraline, on a whole, is quite an eerie movie, but even though this parallel world has a creepy feel, nothing can prepare audiences for the Other Mother. While the actual concept of having a different mother is quite a strange one when you then add the visual representation of this character it can become very scary for young viewers.

Instead of being the kind and loving type of mother that people are used to, Other Mother is the total opposite. She’s a very scary character and is one of the reasons that Coraline is actually a very spooky movie overall.

9 Judge Doom (Who Framed Roger Rabbit)

Who Framed Roger Rabbit is an incredibly fun movie that has some iconic movie characters. However, it also happens to feature a very scary villain in Judge Doom. Originally, showcased to be one of the live-action characters, he becomes truly terrifying when it becomes clear that he is a toon.

The big reveal is a very creepy moment, inflating himself as his eyeballs pop out to reveal his true identity, which is certainly very scary. But it’s also the fact that he tortures other characters that makes him so horrible, using the dip to put other toons through as much pain as possible.

8 General Woundwort (Watership Down)

On a whole, Watership Down is an incredibly scary and upsetting movie for younger audiences, yet that is exactly who the film is targetted towards. A big reason for that is General Woundwort, who might be animated, but that doesn’t stop this rabbit from being incredibly scary.

Rabbits are traditionally cute in movie representation, but that isn’t the case here with this giant bunny who has no problem in killing anyone which gets in its way. Much larger than the other characters with various scars all over it, Woundwort is a very scary presence. His fight scene with Bigwig is one of the scariest scenes in the history of children’s movies, with this savage bunny being easy to be scared of.

7 Miss. Trunchbull (Matilda)

At some point throughout everyone’s education, they will come across a bad teacher. Someone who is lazy, doesn’t care about the students and can be quite grumpy and mean. However, for the most part, teachers tend to be sweet, nurturing, and attentive people who want the best for those they teach.

That is why Miss. Trunchbull is so scary. As the headmistress in the movie, Matilda, she dishes out the most insane forms of punishment, from forcing a child to eat a full cake to locking them into a cupboard with rusty nails. She’s the total opposite of what young viewers expect from someone in this position and because she’s such a dominating physical presence as well, Miss Trunchbull becomes very scary.

6 Slappy The Dummy (Goosebumps)

There is just something very creepy about this ventriloquist dummy that makes it very scary. It’s the way he moves, the way he looks, and the way he talks all combined into one terrifying package. Goosebumps is a movie filled with spooky characters and monsters, but it is a small dummy that comes out as the scariest thing to appear.

Slappy is very creepy and the fact he’s so self-aware of that fact only makes him scarier. Slappy is out to cause nothing but mayhem and the fact he does just that only amplifies why audiences don’t like him. But ultimately, it’s the eyes, the dead eyes that really create the scare factor.

5 Claude Frollo (The Hunchback Of Notre-Dame)

While Disney movies are seen as the ultimate family-friendly films that everyone should be able to enjoy, they also play home to some of the scariest villains in movie history. A great example of that is Claude Frollo, who can be scary to both children and adults.

There’s something very unsettling about Claude Frollo, and while adults will be able to understand the bigger message and hidden meanings, children will simply find him to just be simply scary. The fact he is maniacal in his behavior is enough to make him scary for young viewers, doing everything he can to hurt the true heroes of the movie.

4 The Wicked Witch Of The West (The Wizard Of Oz)

The Wizard Of Oz is a true classic of the movie world which has a lot of excellent characters who are easy to love. Because the characters such as Dorothy and The Cowardly Lion are so fun and kind, it only enhances how vile the Wicked Witch is.

She’s out for revenge and wants to hurt Dorothy as much as possible. Being able to fly around using her magical powers or using her equally terrifying monkeys, there is just something about this character that is unnerving, with the cackle playing a big factor in that.

3 Child Catcher (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang)

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a fun movie musical that has a really whimsical feel. There’s a real range of characters in the film and that includes the absolutely terrifying Child Catcher. Everything about this character is incredibly creepy, from the way that he is played to the visual aesthetic of him.

The fact that he lures children in by trying to seem nice and kind, only to capture and kidnap them is an incredibly scary situation, especially for younger viewers. He abuses the trust people place into him and proves himself to be truly vile.

2 Professor Quirrell/Lord Voldemort (Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone)

While later Harry Potter movies do tend to have a darker vibe, when it comes to the original film, there is no doubt that it has a firm family feel for everyone to enjoy. The movie is a fun, magical world with lots of unique and exciting characters, but much like any family fantasy movie, there has to be a villain.

In the end, it turns out to be Professor Quirrell who is the villain here, but of course, that comes with a twist. The reason he ends up being utterly terrifying is the fact that Lord Voldermort appears on the back of his head. The sheer visual of this one is incredibly creepy and while it only pops up in the movie for a short time, there’s no denying the fact it is scary.

1 The Grand High Witch (The Witches)

When it comes to scary characters in children’s movies they do not get any more terrifying than this. The Grand High Witch is enough to put nightmares into anybody, with this character looking like it belongs in a top horror franchise, not a children’s film.

Seeing someone peel off their face is scary enough, but then when the reveal is as horrifying as this, it’s no wonder people were scared. Having the skin drip off and the true witch is revealed, it is a very spooky moment that helps to create one seriously scary character.
