Season 5 of Call of Duty: Warzone promises new content will be coming to the popular free-to-play battle royale game. Based on the same engine as last year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Warzone was released as a stand-alone title on consoles and PC earlier this year. It is the second time the series has seen a battle royale mode, starting with the Blackout mode included with Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Despite many bugs, it has remained one of the most popular games in the already crowded genre.
Season 5 of Warzone is set to launch on August 5th, and new details about what will be included have just been revealed. In addition to the map getting some alterations with the opening of the stadium area and the introduction of trains, two new weapons and a new faction are joining the game.
The new faction is called Shadow Company, and is said to have been created to take advantage of the gap left when the Armistice collapsed. While technically aligned with the Allegiance faction, they are a private military that puts their own goals first. Shadow Company also wears the same logo as seen in Modern Warfare 2, which already has characters and cosmetic references in the game.
The two new weapons are technically not official yet, but are included in the official trailer and promotional material released for Shadow Company. One weapon is an AN-94 assault rifle, similar to the AK-47 and the more recent CR-56 AMAX, and the other is the B&T APC9 (SMG-9). This gun was leaked several months back thanks to data miners finding the model in the game’s code. It should be noted that Warzone often changes weapon names, so these two new guns may be called something else in the final release.
While a new faction isn’t all that interesting to fans of a game that has such a threadbare story, two new guns are a decent incentive to keep players engaged in another season of Warzone. We are still yet to see what their new battle pass, which will have 100 tiers of rewards, will contain either. Based on what we do know, this new season looks to be shaping up to be just as strong as the previous one.
