[Warning: This post contains SPOILERS for Jurassic World.]

We live in age where if you want to know every plot beat of film before you see it, there’s a real good chance you can easily find what you seek. It’s a symptom of the times, where almost any information you want is literally a button press away.

Obviously, we here at Screen Rant don’t shy away from discussing movies in great detail, and often before a film’s wide release, but there’s something to be said for the joy and delight a film evokes when it can genuinely surprise you. That’s all a part of the “movie magic,” and losing that element of surprise is what Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow regrets most about the film’s recently leaked plot details.

It was just last week that new rumors about Jurassic World made their way online (via a JoBlo scoop) detailing new park attractions, among other significant plot elements, In in an exclusive interview with /Film, Trevorrow has confirmed that those rumors are true.

Yet, it’s with a heavy heart that the director gives his confirmation, saying:

“When I was a kid, you got to discover everything at once, it washed over you and blew your mind. Now it only takes one person to spoil it for everyone else. I hope whoever leaked it is actively trying to undermine what we’re doing. Because if they’re trying to help, they’re doing it wrong.”

Trevorrow also called the leak “discouraging,” for him and his crew, adding “not because we want to hide things from the fans, but because we’re working so hard to create something full of surprises.” Presented in that light, it’s hard not to sympathize with his disappointment in having even a little of the curtain pulled back too soon.

But the dinosaurs are out of the pen – so to speak – and serve as biggest attraction of Isla Nubar’s now fully functional theme park. This Jurassic Park is the real deal, with hotels, restaurants, a nightlife, and of course, dinosaurs. “Real ones. You can get closer to them than you ever imagined possible,” Trevorrow teases. “It’s the realization of John Hammond’s dream, and I think you’ll want to go there.”

Trevorrow also revealed Jurassic World will take place 22 years after the first film and explore two fundamental themes: our greed and our learned indifference toward scientific discovery. Both will be woven throughout the film, according to Trevorrow.

“What if, despite previous disasters, they built a new biological preserve where you could see dinosaurs walk the earth…and what if people were already kind of over it? We imagined a teenager texting his girlfriend with his back to a T-Rex behind protective glass. For us, that image captured the way much of the audience feels about the movies themselves. ‘We’ve seen CG dinosaurs. What else you got?’ Next year, you’ll see our answer.”

That last quip will surely have fans wondering just what new spectacle Jurassic World has in store. What’s more amazing than CG dinosaurs? Better CG dinosaurs? Perhaps Trevorrow is hinting at the new dinosaur created just for Jurassic World, yet another of the film’s elements he had hoped fans could have discovered for themselves.

Trevorrow did, however, provide more details about the new dino, saying:

“…there will be one new dinosaur created by the park’s geneticists. The gaps in her sequence were filled with DNA from other species, much like the genome in the first film was completed with frog DNA. This creation exists to fulfill a corporate mandate – they want something bigger, louder, with more teeth. And that’s what they get.”

But he stresses fans worried that this lab-grown dinosaur is at odds with Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton’s vision for the series shouldn’t worry, insisting what they’re doing isn’t unlike what Crichton himself suggested in the novels. He goes on to calm fears by saying, “This animal is not a mutant freak. It doesn’t have a snake’s head or octopus tentacles.” Whew! That’s a relief. Save that sort of schlock for Sharktosaur vs Octosnake (copyright pending).

Still, changing up the formula and giving audiences something fresh when it comes to the Jurassic Park series could be just what reignites the franchise. It could also be what sinks it, but we won’t know for sure until we see it.
