Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 7 has come to a dramatic end, but what other Star Wars TV shows are in the works? The Star Wars franchise is going through something of a transition, and the various Disney+ shows are becoming increasingly important to the future of Lucasfilm. The anthology films were dropped after the box office failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story, and the sequel trilogy has proved surprisingly divisive. As a result, Lucasfilm’s attention has turned to the small screen, where it is having much more success.

In truth, right now Lucasfilm is the darling of Disney+. The Mandalorian proved to be a hit, with Baby Yoda going viral and viewers flocking to the new streaming service; it was the most popular streaming show in the US in December 2019. Disney has struggled to match that with other digital originals, with only Star Wars: The Clone Wars meeting with the same kind of popular and critical acclaim.

All this means Lucasfilm’s Disney+ TV shows are probably a major corporate priority for Disney right now. Fortunately, there are a number of eagerly-anticipated projects in the works, and there are rumors Lucasfilm is looking at other ideas as well.

The Mandalorian Seasons 2 & 3

Disney was, unsurprisingly, quite confident The Mandalorian would be a success; they wasted no time booking a second season. Principal photography for The Mandalorian season 2 had wrapped up before the coronavirus pandemic, and post-production has continued despite the shutdowns. Disney originally hoped to release The Mandalorian season 2 in October, but it’s difficult to say whether it will hit that window, given there are surely delays of some kind. The House of Mouse has already signed up for a third season.

The Cassian Andor Prequel Show

Diego Luna was introduced as the ill-fated Rebel Cassian Andor in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and he was booked to reprise the role in a Disney+ series alongside voice actor Alan Tudyk as the recommissioned Empire droid K-2SO. According to a recently-leaked synopsis, this will be set during the formative years of the Rebellion, a “rousing spy thriller [which] will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire.”

The Obi-Wan Kenobi Series

A much-anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi series features the return of Ewan McGregor. Unfortunately production has been delayed, reportedly due to problems with the script; the plot is believed to have been too similar to The Mandalorian, which probably wouldn’t have been a problem before The Mandalorian proved to be such a hit. Lucasfilm has recently recruited writer Joby Harold (Edge of Tomorrow and John Wick: Chapter 3), and production is expected to begin in early 2021.

A Female-Centric Star Wars Series By The Creators Of Russian Doll

The latest news is that a new female-centric Star Wars series is in the works by Leslye Headland, the creator of Russian Doll. Precious little is known about this project right now – it doesn’t even have a working title – but it will reportedly be set “in a different part of the Star Wars timeline than other projects.” Now that Star Wars: The Clone Wars has ended, paving the way for Ahsoka Tano’s return in The Mandalorian season 2, Headland’s new series may be an introduction for the next generation of Star Wars’ fan-favorite characters.
