Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige, has said he always wanted Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus in the MCU’s Spider-Man films. Molina, who played Doc Ock in Sam Raimi’s 2004 Spider-Man 2, will reprise his role in the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home. While boasting an illustrious career on stage and screen, in recent year’s Molina has also proven to be a renowned voice actor, adding his voice to the likes of Frozen II, Ralph Breaks the Internet and a plethora of film and TV productions.

Tom Holland will reprise his role as Spider-Man in No Way Home, as he seeks the help of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange to restore his secret identity that Mysterio exposed at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home. As well as the return of Molina, Jamie Foxx has also signed on to reprise his role of Electro, first seen during Andrew Garfield’s outing as Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The return of notable cast members from previous Spider-Man films has sparked a flood of rumors that Garfield and other Spidey Tobey Maguire will also return. Despite no proof that either actor will make an appearance, this hasn’t stopped a series of embarrassing errors across the internet and in cinemas, such as No Way Home fan posters being used as promo art.

In an interview with Empire, Feige discussed how they approached villains in the MCU’s take on the web-slinger. Feige highlighted that they always wanted to add previously unseen Spider-Man bad guys, like Vulture and Mysterio, instead of revisiting villains already seen. Feige then went on to single out Molina’s performance, describing his casting as Doctor Octopus as perfect and admitting that, if they did revisit the character, it would have to be Molina who reprised the role.

“‘Do we want to revisit villains we’ve seen before?’ No, let’s do Vulture, and Mysterio, and characters we haven’t brought to the screen before. But I remember thinking, ‘How would you even do Doc Ock again?’, because Alfred Molina is perfect casting. If you ever brought him back, it would have to be him somehow.”

It’s hardly surprising that Molina is regarded so highly by Feige. Sam Raimi’s second Spider-Man film is considered a prime example of exemplary superhero films, and Molina’s performance as the four-tentacled scientist stands out as one of the best portrayals of a Spider-Man villain seen on screen. That being said, just how Molina’s Doc Ock will end up in No Way Home is still not clear. The previous trailer shows that this is definitely the same Octavius that sacrificed himself at the end of Spider-Man 2, however, with a little help of digital de-aging to make Molina appear more like his 2004 self. It’s also confirmed that it’s not just Molina who is receiving a little help from CGI, as Doc Ock’s tentacles will be digitally created instead of practical pieces, like those seen in Raimi’s movie.

Despite a successful run, there’s a chance that this will be the final time we see Tom Holland as the web-slinger, at least in his current capacity. During a recent interview, he confirmed that he views No Way Home as the end of a franchise. What this quite means remains to be seen, as Holland will no longer be contractually obliged to appear as Spider-Man after the film’s release. It doesn’t mean Holland won’t make an appearance as Spider-Man again, but until Spider-Man: No Way Home hits cinemas, fans will have to wait to see how big the film’s repercussions will be for the larger Marvel Universe, as well as Holland’s Spider-Man.
