In this psychological action thriller, Basinger played Jessica Kate Martin, a woman who gets attacked and confined in the attic of her house by a group of criminals. In desperation, she manages to contact a young guy named Ryan, by using the broken wires of a landline phone in her home.

Ryan is forced to race against time before his cellphone battery is depleted, and both Jessica and her family are murdered. The premise got a bit of flack for using the cellphone as a plot gimmick, but there’s no denying Basinger’s abilities as an actress, especially when she’s playing such a traumatized character.

The Door In The Floor (2004) – 6.7

Basinger starred in another film adaptation of a novel, this time by author John Irving. The Door in the Floor focuses on Ted and Marion Cole, played by Jeff Bridges and Basinger respectively, who separate after a family tragedy does significant damage to their relationship.

Over the course of the film, their divide grows due to their culpability in the accident, which is revealed near the end. To compensate, the two begin trying to drown their sorrows and guilt by making a lot of bad decisions, which ends as expected. Basinger’s performance is understated in the film, but it works for a character who has been numbed by tragedy.

The Burning Plain (2008) – 6.8

Basinger starred alongside sometimes-action star Charlize Theron and Jennifer Lawrence in this 2008 drama film about three women involved in three storylines that are woven together in non-chronological order. She starred as Gina, a woman whose affair is discovered by her daughter.

After unwittingly killing Gina and her lover, the story shifts forward over a decade, where the daughter has now grown up and faces guilt for her past transgressions. The film was noted for having some good performances, but critics were split, with IMDb awarding it 6.8 when the dust had settled.

8 Mile (2002) – 7.1

In this classic film, Basinger played Stephanie, the alcoholic mother of a poor family living in a low-income Michigan neighborhood. Her performance as Stephanie was questioned by certain critics like Richard Roeper, who felt it was miscast in comparison to Eminem’s surprisingly authentic character.
