Koei Tecmo, the publisher of the successful Dynasty Warriors series, has expressed interest in working with two franchises. In an interview with Kotaku, the president of Koei Tecmo, Hisashi Koinuma, stated that he would be interested in working with Star Wars, saying that the popular space opera would be “perfect” as a Warriors game. Nintendo fans however, will probably be more intrigued by his desire to work on Super Mario.

Hisashi Koinuma: “I’d like to have an opportunity to work on Nintendo’s Mario,” “Basically, he’s a character I’ve been playing with ever since I was a kid, so if I could do something with him, I’d be really happy.”

According to the interview, Koinuma says he would like to work on almost any type of game featuring Mario, whether it be a Warriors, or another genre.

Koinuma: “I think anything would be great,” “Even a simulation would be good.”

Koei Tecmo has expanded its horizons in recent years, putting the Warriors name on different franchises. In relation to Nintendo, Koei developed the successful Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors. Hyrule Warriors originally released for the Wii U in 2014. It was later ported to the 3DS, and received a “Definitive Edition” for the Switch. Clearly, the game is popular. The Definitive Edition has a solid 77 on Metacritic, with Fire Emblem Warriors earning a 74. These two games show that Koei knows how to handle Nintendo franchises.

Many would welcome a “Super Mario Warriors” (“Mushroom Kingdom Warriors?”) onto their Switch. The idea of Mario plowing through an army of Goombas and Koopa Troopas armed with a hammer and Fire Flower, is something that one day should be implemented. The concept of Mario starring in a beat ’em up might have sounded odd before, but Mario has also expanded his horizons. The mustached-hero starred in an XCOM-inspired game, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, last year. “Mushroom Kingdom Warriors” would be the perfect holdover until Mario’s next 3D adventure.

Interestingly, Koinuma mentions “simulation” as an idea for Mario. Perhaps it would be similar to Koei’s strategy series, Nobunaga’s Ambition. The company did crossover Pokémon with Nobunaga’s Ambition in the DS game, Pokémon Conquest, so bringing Mario into it is possible. But with tactical elements already present in Mario + Rabbids, a Warriors game would probably be more anticipated by fans. Maybe one day we’ll see that and a Star Wars entry in the series.
