Episodes of YouTube’s latest K-Pop Evolution have led fans to call for an end to bad blood between their favorite groups and idols. Best known for its bright lights, vibrant colors, and wild concepts, K-Pop is more than just music or dance – its artwork, and the evolution of it all, have been documented by YouTube in a new original series. K-Pop Evolution rides the “Hallyu” wave by sharing never-before-seen stories of popular South Korean pop bands such as EXO, NCT, Super Junior, and Red Velvet. But amidst the high of getting up, close, and personal with their artists, the K-Pop Evolution is also making viewers see beyond their own bias, and prompting them to stop the fandom wars.
Fans are everything in the huge world of modern K-Pop which is said to have been started by Seo Taiji and the Boys back in 1992. Today, with names like BTS and BLACKPINK taking it to the four corners of the world via billions of music video views, Korean pop culture is also the third-largest export industry for the country. K-Pop Evolution, thus, begins its narration in Itaewon where the idea of K-Pop saw its birth with the Key Boys in 1966 and ends with an insider look into the making of a music video for EVERGLOW’s “Dun Dun.” But many feel that the magic of K-Pop is getting lost between the “stans” at times going to extremes by degrading the older groups who literally created the formula for it all.
From skincare routines to multiple mukbang videos, South Korea has influenced multiple obsessions, but the biggest one remains K-Pop. However, fan wars do end up being an unavoidable part of it all, which the internet witnesses every day via feuds on Twitter and Instagram. Those watching YouTube’s K-Pop Evolution feel that understanding how the phenomenon blossomed into existence may change it all. In the comment section of episode 2, titled, “First Idols,” even hardcore fans of BTS, BP, Twice, and others seem to agree that the first-gen idol groups shaped the way for the K-Pop of 2021. As a result, they need to be given the credit they deserve.
Even as fans praised K-Pop Evolution in the comments, a few fans bought up the topic of how, very much unlike the stans, the idols had nothing but admiration for fellow artists. As one viewer said, “Most fandoms are busy pitting the groups against each other and yet the idols themselves admire, if not in friendly terms, with one another.” K-Pop Evolution has also noted how the rivalry, in fact, could have been seeded by the media, as the idols themselves were busy “leading the culture together.”
But even then, some of the responses also show certain fandoms “busy boasting it their bias were the one that started it all,” instead of appreciating the documentary. As the popularity of K-Pop continues to swell globally, fan wars too are getting intense. Though a few fans have addressed it on social media in the past, it makes a big difference when a popular show like K-Pop Evolution brings it up. Hopefully, this episode acts as the olive branch that brings all stans of all K-Pop groups closer to each other!
