Warning: contains potential spoilers for Marvel Unlimited: Captain America: Steve Rogers!

In a new Marvel preview, Captain America is taking his patriotism to the next level. He is saving the Liberty Bell – one of America’s most prominent symbols of independence. This is one of many Infinity Comics that Marvel has recently released onto the Marvel Unlimited app.

Infinity Comics are digital stories that readers scroll through without full-page divisions appearing. It has a single, infinite page from the start until the finish of the issue. Marvel recently announced this latest feature for Marvel Unlimited subscribers while also adding several new titles including Captain America: Steve Rogers, It’s Jeff!, and several character primers. Now, after announcing this new digital comic initiative, Marvel is providing potential readers with a peek at one of the Infinity Comics.

Captain America: Steve Rogers is a four-part story from the creative team of Jay Edidin, Nico Leon, and Dono Sánchez-Almara. In the story, Captain America faces a group of extremists who want to speak with him. After all, he is the Sentinel of the Liberty and despite their actions – like taking possession of the Liberty Bell and taking over Independence Hall – they believe he’ll be on their side. This mini-series is optimized for digital viewing, which the comic industry has traditionally not been designed or written for specifically. Marvel is bringing readers a new experience. Steve Rogers is often seen in a similar light as Superman – they are boy scouts who uphold very particular values without wavering. However, this series aims to show an unexpected side to the super soldier. This could result in a similar vein as Captain America: Civil War, where the titular hero was confronted with an ultimatum from the same government that created him – the same people leading the country he proudly represents. Over the years, Captain America’s view of the American Dream and Americans’ view of him as a hero has evolved to fit each era he lives through. However, there are certain principles he will not waver on, regardless of how much time passes or who is committing injustices.

The editor of this series, Alanna Smith, states, “Jay has really great instincts for characters that too many people dismiss as ‘boy scouts’ – I noticed this when he wrote Cyclops for X-Men: Marvel’s Snapshots, and it’s what made me approach him to write Steve Rogers.” She adds, “I think Jay fundamentally understands that a character’s inherent goodness doesn’t make them boring, or weak, or irrelevant. And you can see it in the way he writes Steve: moral righteousness with a sense of humor and a backbone of steel.”

Regarding the artistic duo for this Captain America series, Smith says, “Nico Leon and Dono Sánchez-Almara on art were a great compliment to that too. Nico really pushed himself out of his comfort zone on this project. He’s been doing bright and upbeat books like Power Pack and Ms. Marvel in recent years, so watching him do a shadowy espionage thriller with Dono incorporating sleek, moody colors was really exciting.” Captain America’s newest adventure is one that puts the hero in a strange position. However, it is one that he needs to be in to confront what the American dream truly is and what it means to not just him, but the people he protects every day. Captain America: Steve Rogers is currently available on Marvel Unlimited.
