The 2019 League of Legends World Championship group stage is well underway, with Group D now reaching its halfway point. Group favorites Team Liquid and Invictus Gaming are putting up the expected wins, with DAMWON Gaming matching their level. The three-way tie puts added pressure on the upcoming second cycle of round robin matches.
Day one of the League of Legends World Championship saw reigning world champions Invictus Gaming take on LMS Summer runners-up Ahq Esports Club. The double round robin format meant that this would be the first of two match-ups for these teams. The Chinese side of Invictus took a solid win over their opponents, the game taking just under thirty minutes to complete. The second match from Group D pit MSI runners-up Team Liquid against the LCK’s third seed, DAMWON Gaming. After a close affair, the North Americans took control of the match and secured the victory over DAMWON at just over thirty minutes.
The competition heated up on day two, as Team Liquid took on Invictus Gaming in an MSI semi-final rematch. Earlier this year, Team Liquid managed to upset the reigning world champions at the Mid-Season Invitational, denying them another Grand Final appearance. The two met once again here at Worlds, with iG getting their revenge over the North American squad. The second match of the day allowed DAMWON put themselves on the board with their first win over Ahq Esports.
Day three marked the end of the first cycle of round robin matches, with DAMWON and Invictus facing off in the day’s first game. The nearly forty-minute match saw DAMWON come out victorious over iG, securing their second win of their first ever Worlds group stage. Team Liquid’s future now stood in jeopardy, as they needed to match the wins of their other two group members to have a good chance at making the play-offs. The North Americans took on Ahq Esports, finally securing their second group stage win after a forty-two minute battle. DAMWON, Invictus, and Liquid now stand in a three-way tie, each holding two wins and one loss. Ahq is yet to get their first win.
The group stage continues for Group D on Sunday, October 20th, where they’ll complete the second cycle of round robin matches. That final day will decide who advances to the World Championship play-offs, which are set to begin on Saturday, October 26th.
