Sheldon and Amy might not have been the most romantic couple on The Big Bang Theory, but they occasionally had some swoon-worthy moments. In fact, of all the couples on the show, they were the only ones committed to having regular date nights. Thanks to their relationship agreement, the second Thursday of every month was a date night, as Amy proudly boasted to Penny in “The Shiny Trinket Maneuver.”

Despite their enviable commitment to spending time together, those nights were rarely ever the typical romantic date nights fans expected them to be. Their dates ranged from tragically hilariously to adorably sweet and everything in between. Through it all, they remained the funny, awkward, and sometimes frustrating couple that fans grew to love.

10 First Date Chaperoned By Penny

Amy and Sheldon’s first official date night happened while she was still, as he liked to say, “a girl who’s a friend but not his girlfriend.” Penny advised him to go out with Amy at least once when he said he was considering having a baby with her even though they barely knew each other. Since it was her idea, he asked Penny to drive him and Amy to their date and she joined them for dinner.

The date was hardly romantic with a third wheel at the table, especially when it turned into a conversation about Penny’s sex life. Throughout their dinner, Penny tried to get them to learn more about each other, but neither Amy nor Sheldon were really into it. However, they did bond to some extent as they marveled over the men Penny dated on The Big Bang Theory.

9 The Anxiety Optimization Date

After struggling to make progress in his Dark Matter research, Sheldon found a way to use elevated anxiety levels to work better with Amy’s help. Despite being hyper-focused on work at the time, he showed up for date night at Amy’s apartment but he spent the entire time working, despite her protests.

His commitment to showing up for date night was commendable, but he might as well have skipped it since he kept working instead of talking to Amy. The date ended terribly as well when Amy kicked him out after he refused to stop working and he had to take the bus home.

8 “Please Pass The Butter.”

While having dinner in Amy’s apartment in the episode, “The Indecision Amalgamation,” Sheldon kept going on about his trouble choosing between a PS4 and an Xbox One, even ignoring Amy’s polite request to pass the butter until she yelled at him for it.

Even though Sheldon took things to the extreme, sharing his problem with his partner was something most couples could relate to about The Big Bang Theory couple. The date itself was simple and Amy’s exaggerated reactions to Sheldon’s explanation were hilarious, especially when she yelled “please pass the butter!” To her credit, even though she dismissed his issue over dinner, she later supported him by accompanying him to the store.

7 Dinner At The Cheesecake Factory

In the episode, “The Shiny Trinket Maneuver,” Amy and Sheldon had one of their official date nights at the Cheesecake Factory. During their date, Amy shared some good news with Sheldon that a paper she wrote was being published in a distinguished journal and he brushed it off and focused on celebrating that he got 100 followers on Twitter.

It was a typical Sheldon move to dismiss the accomplishments of others and Amy was understandably upset over this. The rest of the date wasn’t shown, but judging from Sheldon sulking later at home, it seemed to have gone downhill from then. The one saving grace for this one was that Sheldon made up for being a terrible boyfriend by buying Amy a tiara as an apology and she absolutely loved it.

6 The Anniversary Celebration

While Sheldon and Amy didn’t have the most successful relationship on The Big Bang Theory, they made efforts to celebrate even the little milestones. For example, for their anniversary in “The Date Night Variable,” they went to a fancy restaurant recommended by Raj. To Amy’s surprise and dismay, Sheldon invited Raj along to their special night.

The date had all the makings of a romantic night with the fancy restaurant setting and Sheldon’s contractual obligation to ask Amy about her day and “engage in casual physical contact that a disinterested onlooker might mistake for intimacy.” Things got a little better after Amy blatantly asked Raj to leave and told Sheldon to say something meaningful. He shared some moving lines from the first Spiderman movie, which smoothed out the rocky start.

5 Experiments Of The Mind & Heart

Amy and Sheldon’s relationship on The Big Bang Theory progressed a lot slower than everyone else’s. Sheldon was happy with this glacial pace but Amy wanted things to move a little faster. “The Launch Acceleration” highlighted this when she proposed an experiment during their date night to increase Sheldon’s feelings for her.

While the theme music from a video game isn’t the most usual background sound for a date, Sheldon enjoyed hearing it and it was proof that Amy knew him and the things he loved well. Although she used that knowledge to further her agenda, her commitment to making the night as enjoyable for him as possible was sweet and romantic.

4 Valentine’s Dinner On A Train

To make Valentine’s Day enjoyable for both of them, Amy proposed having dinner on a vintage train. Sheldon was happy about this, of course, but then he spent most of dinner in conversation with a random stranger and ignored Amy. When she got fed up and complained, he retaliated by kissing her.

It was the couple’s first kiss and quite romantic, even though the moments leading up to it were terribly frustrating. Once Sheldon started paying attention to Amy, the date improved significantly and the kiss was a major milestone for their relationship.

3 Valentine’s Day At Home

Sheldon hated the idea of Valentine’s Day but he agreed to buy gifts and go to dinner with Amy in the episode “The Tangible Affection.” Knowing how he felt about the whole thing, Amy told him they didn’t have to do any of that and they could order in and watch one of his “beloved Star War Trek things.”

To show his appreciation of her consideration, Sheldon gave her a gift, despite the change of plans. This was one of the few times both of them acted selflessly for each other. Amy was considerate of Sheldon’s discomfort with celebrations and affection and stopped pushing him to do the things she wanted. In turn, he gave her a meaningful gift despite his feelings on gift-giving.

2 Building A Blanket Fort

When Sheldon was excluded from a weekend symposium in “The Fortification Implementation,” he sulked about it throughout his date with Amy at his apartment. When Amy referenced the rules in their relationship agreement against pouting during date night, he stuck a picture of his smiling face in front of him to get around it. To cheer him up, Amy suggested building a blanket fort.

Sheldon had so much fun building Fort Cozy McBlanket that he was smiling genuinely by the time they finished it. It even led to their first sleepover together because he didn’t want the fun to end and that was a big step for their relationship. Unlike most of their date nights, they both had fun on this one and it brought them closer together.

1 The Birthday Celebration

For Amy’s birthday in “The Opening Night Excitation,” Sheldon decided to take their relationship a step further. His plan was to take her out to dinner first, but when Amy found out what he had planned, she insisted on skipping everything else and going straight to the gift.

Intimacy was Sheldon’s biggest challenge so his wish to be intimate with Amy showed how important he was to her and how much he loved her. It was also one of the few times on the show that Sheldon put someone else ahead of himself and both of them enjoyed the experience.
