Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) has been through a lot since she was first introduced on The CW’s superhero show Arrow. While at first it seemed as though she drowned in the boat accident that stranded Oliver Queen on Lian Yu, it was later revealed that she had actually survived and been doing some training of her own. After “dying” a second time, Sara ended up with the League of Assassins and adopted the moniker Black Canary, which became her vigilante name on the streets of Starling City. Sara then died again (for real this time) but was resurrected by the waters of the Lazarus Pit a year later.
That’s more than enough internal conflict to be dealing with as Sara – now called White Canary – sets out on a new journey in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, the latest addition to The CW’s DC universe. Along with a ragtag group of heroes and villains, and led by Time Master Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill), White Canary will travel into the future and the past to hunt down villainous immortal Vandal Savage (Casper Crump).
That’s not all that Lotz has been up to lately, however. She’s also starring in Syfy’s 400 Days, alongside her Legends of Tomorrow co-star Brandon Routh and The Flash’s Tom Cavanagh, as an astronaut who embarks on a training mission to spend 400 days in an underground bunker, in order to test the potential psychological effects of a trip to Mars. Screen Rant got a chance to speak to Lotz about the film, and also to ask her about what kind of mental state White Canary is in following her resurrection and the violent restoration of her soul.
“She’s still dealing with the bloodlust. It’s kind of a side effect of coming back from the Lazarus Pit. She’s always kind of struggling with that light side and dark side. Is she a hero? Is she a villain? There’s a lot of that. And then, also, a little bit more levity sometimes. White Canary gets to have a little bit more fun.”
Based on the trailers so far, Legends of Tomorrow certainly seems to be more in line with The Flash than Arrow in terms of tone, with lots of emphasis on action-packed fun and banter. One teaser in particular showcased White Canary’s bloodlust being treated with a degree of humor, as Rip Hunter becomes exasperated with Sara’s refusal to rein in the violence.
One thing that Lotz’s stint on Arrow never really offered was the opportunity for time travel (unless you count all those flashbacks), so we asked the actress which of the time periods that she’s visited in filming (so far) she enjoyed the most. “I love the ‘70s,” She replied. “The ‘70s was really fun. I’d love to also… We haven’t gone to the ‘20s. I feel like going to the Roaring Twenties would be really fun.”
Legends of Tomorrow is still filming (Lotz was speaking to us from the make-up chair), and if successful is potentially up for a second season, so that visit to the Roaring Twenties could happen sooner rather than later. The Flash will return on Tuesday, January 19, 2016, while Arrow will return on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 and Legends of Tomorrow will see its series premiere on Thursday, January 21, 2016.
400 Days is available on VOD and limited theatrical release from January 12th, 2016.
