Level5 has released the first movie for Yo-Kai Watch Jam: Yo-Kai Academy Y, introducing us to more of what we can expect from the game when it is released next month in digital format for the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 4. There is no word on a physical edition as of yet.
If you’re a fan of anime—and if you’re playing this game, you had better be—the newly released movie will look familiar to you, as it is reminiscent of the intro sequence to most anime shows—complete with pop music and choreographed dancing. In fact, there is even a part of the movie where we see a Transformer-Esque battle take place in the middle of the Academy where a robot made of what looks like buildings takes on a lava monster. Seriously. The sequence takes place at night, so hopefully, there are no school tests for your character in the morning. Nintendo Soup was the first to share the news of the trailer, which you can watch below.
Battle sequences aside, we get a glimpse into what we can expect to play out on the Academy campus, a campus that comes complete with restaurants, trading centers, and its own economy. There are cliques to help or fight, friends to be made, and mysteries to solve.
The game will follow the lead of its predecessors in the franchise, allowing you to explore an open-world, encountering Yo-Kai and human characters to interact with. We can expect a lot of tension between the school’s “police” force and the student mafia which we are sure to be dragged into. Although, the movie hints more at comedic interactions as much as the action sequences.
Given everything we know about the game and the existing stories, it would be safe to say that this is a game that you should be buying when it is released. If you aren’t familiar with the franchise or the storyline, this is the perfect place to start to get to know the universe, the characters, and the conflict. If there is one game that you take a risk on this year, make sure it’s this one.
