LG’s new 65-inch OLED TV is a rollable TV that hides itself when not in use and blends in with the surrounding furniture. TV enthusiasts will already be aware that the company’s OLED TVs are some of the best money can buy. These televisions offer great contrast with deep blacks, great dynamic range, high frame rates for gaming, and wide viewing angles.
OLED technology also provides manufacturers with additional flexibility, as in spite of the typically expensive price, these displays can technically be bent and rolled. For example, LG offers a range of (very expensive) rollable OLED TVs that are able to hide themselves when not in use, or hide letterboxing by rolling only a portion of the TV up.
Now LG wants to take the idea of a rollable TV a step further. The company is introducing a new version of its 65-inch OLED Evo television, as part of its Object Collection. The new version takes a more elegant and high-end design, as instead of sitting on a TV stand, the TV has an ultra-thin motorized cover. LG says customers will be able to attach the TV and cover to a wall, or simply have it leaning against the wall. The cover itself is made out of a high-end fabric by Danish premium textile brand Kvadrat. It’s meant to look like a painting or another piece of art when not in use. Despite its thin profile, the built-in TV speakers are still able to output an impressive 80 watts. The TV is slated to launch on December 15 in South Korea for 9.9 million won, or roughly $8,400 USD, and will be available in three colors: beige, redwood, and green. Customers will be able to purchase additional cover colors separately.
Premium Price For Premium Features
It’s a nifty concept, but a TV leaned up against a wall versus standing upright or bolted to a wall raises some stability questions. In reality, it’s probably more of a design-focused purchase than a functional one, despite having a great OLED panel attached. LG says its new TV is, “reminiscent of a gallery where works of art are placed, it makes the space even more beautiful” (translated), highlighting how it’s primarily designed to look nice and blend into any room it’s placed in.
LG’s newest Evo television model joins the rest of the company’s fantastic lineup of televisions. While OLED TV panels are great they do have some downsides, such as burn-in and the inability to get as bright as traditional LCD panels. However, these are often compromises buyers are willing to make in order to get the benefits associated with an LG OLED TV.
