The newly-released Loki special look reveals that the titular character is finally being true to his moniker, the God of Mischief. Marvel Studios is taking a slightly longer break this time for their Disney+ projects following the end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. When it restarts in a little more than a month, it will mark the return of Tom Hiddleston’s fan-favorite character, Loki, through his own series.

Loki’s escape during Avengers: Endgame’s time heist functions as the aforementioned show’s narrative springboard. The project will follow this 2012 version of the character through a brand new adventure. Still, this time, he’s forced to work for the Time Variance Authority, who arrested him after running away with the Tesseract during the Avengers’ attempt to recollect the Infinity Stones from the past in the 2019 blockbuster. This created a branched timeline, effectively putting him under the TVA’s radar. Marketing for Loki has been cleverly designed to keep plot specifics under wraps, but as it turns out, the Time Keepers need his help to contain a far greater threat than he is.

As the release of Loki nears, Marvel Studios is more actively promoting the series. A brand new special clip has been released offering a fresh look at the show, which highlights the antics of the trickster who also directly declares himself to be the God of Mischief. While the character has been known for his moniker for years, Loki is further leaning into this side of Thor’s adopted brother. In the clip, he’s seen creating chaos seemingly intentionally for the sake of his new mission. Understandably, Ravonna describes him as “insubordinate, stubborn, unpredictable,” but Mobius M. Mobius sees this as a good thing since it’s exactly Loki’s incalculable behavior that makes him so effective. Granted, Marvel Studios has depicted him in a similar fashion, but this time, he appears to be more playful and mischievous instead of straight-up evil.

Interestingly, this side of Loki tends only to come out when he’s teaming up with Thor. This was particularly obvious in Thor: Ragnarok which gave the God of Thunder’s MCU sub-franchise a more humorous tone after struggling to find the right approach for years. When Loki acts alone, he’s usually more nefarious, albeit still with a tinge of mischievousness, especially when he knows everything is going according to his plans. However, it’s worth noting that Loki features a pre-redemption iteration of the character. He had just failed to execute arguably his most nefarious plan in taking over the world with the help of Thanos’ Chitauri army. So it’s curious why he’s seemingly more laid back and less angsty during his team-up with the TVA.

Based on the official series synopsis, the Time Keepers are in need of the God of Mischief’s help in Loki to catch “an even greater threat.” It’s uncertain who this mysterious being is at this point, but it’s been revealed that the show will also feature other variants of the character. The popular theory posits that the unidentified character is Lady Loki. Assuming that this is the case, it makes sense that TVA thinks that their best bet in catching a different version of the character is with the help of one of them.
