What makes the movie Love, Actually one of the best Christmas movies for rom-com fans is the fact that it tells so many different tales of love, including love lost, gained, unrequited, unconventional, and even non-romantic. At the heart of the show, which features an amazing ensemble cast, many early on in their careers before they became known actors, are a number of intertwining romantic stories.

But, only a handful of the 14 initial love stories that were to be in the movie made the cut. And while each one is unique, some are more romantic than others. It all depends on perspective. Whether watching Love, Actually for the first time or for the umpteenth time, every relationship has its place, and some make viewers’ hearts go aflutter more than others.

10 Billy Mack & Joe

While the story was a sweet one of love, it doesn’t rank high on the list because it portrayed a brotherly love and wasn’t romantic in nature. Rather, Billy Mack, an aging rock star, realizes that after decades of partying, bedding women, drinking, and doing drugs, that the true love of his life is his long-time manager and best friend.

He confesses this to Joe when he decides to leave a wild party at Elton John’s house to spend Christmas with his friend. It’s sweet, but not romantic.

9 Colin & The American Women

Colin believed that British girls didn’t understand his humor and that his crass and sometimes obnoxious nature and lack of filter would be viewed as adorable in America. So he set out to America to try and meet the woman of his dreams. And as it turns out, he was right.

Indeed, he met not only one but many beautiful American women who found him fascinating, and he even returned to the U.K. with a girlfriend in tow, along with a friend for his pal. There was nothing romantic about the situation – it was all superficial lust. But it was hilarious, nonetheless.

8 Juliet & Mark (& Peter)

Despite being responsible for one of the most romantic scenes from the movie with those signboards and the one, in particular, that reads ” to me, you are perfect,” it’s the context of the situation that makes this one more creepy than romantic.

Mark had secretly been pining for his best friend’s girlfriend and eventual wife for some time. He knew he could never act on his feelings, so he kept her at a distance for, as he put it, “self-preservation.” Some viewers found the whole situation stalker-like while others appreciated the fact that he never tried to steal his friend’s woman. Nonetheless, while the scene was romantic, the situation was anything but.

7 Sarah & Karl

There’s something to say for loved that goes unfulfilled, not because it’s unrequited, but because the timing is off and it just genuinely wasn’t meant to be. Such is the case with Sarah and Karl. While she had been pining him for more than two years, it seems he was up for some romance, too. Or at least lust.

Maybe they just didn’t have the opportunity to see if something was there between them. But Karl didn’t even bother trying, after realizing that in a relationship, he would always come second to Sarah’s mentally ill brother. On the one hand, he can’t be expected to walk wilfully into a complicated situation when he doesn’t even know if there’s anything worth pursuing. But on the other hand, they worked together in close quarters for more than two years, so surely he has an idea of whether or not she might be worth it.

6 Harry & Karen (& Mia)

On the surface, a man buying a gorgeous necklace for a woman for Christmas sounds very romantic, as does getting one a CD of music from her favorite artist. But again, context is where this all runs awry. Harry buys the necklace for the woman he’s having an affair with (whether emotionally, physically, or both) and the CD for his wife, who had already found the necklace and realized upon opening her own gift that the jewelry wasn’t for her.

As Karen told Harry, he made a fool of her. Had his romantic gesture been in the right place, it would have been number-one. But he messed up. But romance can be messy, and this story was compelling, which makes it rank high on the list, despite the fact that it was one of the most heartbreaking stories.

5 John & Judy

There was something oddly sweet about two seemingly lovely people making a living by working as stand-ins for adult films. They bond while simulating sexual scenes, talking about meaningless things and sharing personal information about their likes and dislikes.

It was the most awkward meeting and first “date” ever, and certainly never one they could tell their kids about. But beneath all of the raunchiness and the fact that John and Judy saw each other naked before ever having coffee, it was a sweet and unconventional love story that was oddly romantic, circumstances of their meeting aside.

4 Jamie & Aurelia

One of the more awkward storylines, Jamie had just been cheated on by his girlfriend (who had apparently been sleeping with his brother) and took off to his cottage in France, where he meets a beautiful new housekeeper. While it begins as nothing more than a working relationship, a flirtation begins. The only issue? Neither can understand the other, as he only speaks English and she, only Portuguese.

After leaving his cottage, Jamie can’t shake the feeling that he and Aurelia were meant to be. When you know, you know. So he spends time taking classes to learn Portuguese, travels to her hometown, and delivers a surprise proposal. Turns out she has been working on her English, too, presumably in hopes that he might come looking for her. While it wasn’t exactly a believable story, as far as romantic gestures go, it ranks up there.

3 David & Natalie

The chemistry between David and Natalie wasn’t as evident as with the other couples, but the romantic gestures were top-notch. After seeing Natalie for the first time, an employee who will be working as part of his staff, new Prime Minister David – one of the favorite characters from the movie – instantly recognizes that he’s attracted to her and it will be an issue.

He stands up to the U.S. president, in part, because of Natalie and knowing that the sleazy president had come on to her. But the most romantic gesture was when he went searching for her by knocking on every door on the street he believed her to live on so he could tell her how he felt. It was sweet yet odd since they barely knew one another.

2 Daniel & Carol

Love Actually Every Storyline Ranked From Least To Most Romantic

Despite not really being a major storyline in the movie, this one ranks right up there because it didn’t need to be. Daniel is the recent widow caring for his stepson Sam and doing a brilliant job at it.

In one scene, when helping Sam deal with his feelings for a girl at school, Daniel says he himself is done with love, unless, he jokes, he meets Claudia Schiffer. Cue to the night of the Christmas concert and Daniel literally bumps into another child’s single mom, Carol, who is played by Schiffer herself in one of the sweetest cameos ever. Fast forward to some time later, and it’s clear the chemistry was real and the two are dating. Showing that someone who has lost a love can find love again is just about as romantic as you can get.

1 Sam & Joanna

Was it corny? Yes. Unbelievable? Absolutely. But on the romantic scale, a man (or boy, in this case) running through an airport to catch the woman he loves (or has a crush on) to confess his feelings before she boards that plane and leaves forever is textbook romance.

Even though the situation only ever led to the most innocent kiss on the cheek, the romantic nature of the story, which involved not only Sam building up the confidence to tell a girl he likes her but also helping his stepfather (and himself) through a tragic loss at the same time, was both heart-wrenching and terribly romantic.
