He can play aloof scientists, loving fathers, and coldblooded killers with talent and precision that is not found every day.

Famous all over the world, Mikkelsen speaks multiple languages, including German and Russian, and the Dane has even dabbled in Spanish and Italian. Though he has stated that he feels most himself when acting in his native tongue, he has a broad array of movies to choose from that are in English.

10 Best: The Salvation (73%)

A tale of greed, grief, and revenge, this Western directed by Kristian Levring is a heavy but thrilling ride for fans of the genre. After a Danish immigrant’s wife and young son are senselessly murdered, Jon Jensen (Mads Mikkelsen) does not rest until he has shot the men responsible.

Doing so, he incites the wrath of the cruel man (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) who will threaten, maim, and kill every innocent in his path on his way to take his revenge for the death of his brother.

9 Worst: King Arthur (31%)

Like Robin Hood, Peter Pan, and many other fantasy-based classics, the story of King Arthur has been remade over and over, but more often than not, they simply miss the mark.

Despite a fantastic cast including Clive Owen and Keira Knightley, the movie did not do the best with critics, only earning 31% on Rotten Tomatoes. It did considerably better with audiences who enjoyed it for what it was – a campy, action-fantasy that is a just-for-fun family watch.

8 Best: At Eternity’s Gate (79%)

At Eternity’s Gate is an intriguing and imaginative arthouse film that truly thinks outside the box. A partially fictional study on the real-life painter Vincent van Gogh (Willem Dafoe), it follows the troubled artist as he fills the final years of his life with beautiful paintings of the world around him as he sees it.

Directed by Julian Schnabel, At Eternity’s Gate also features performances by Mads Mikkelsen, Rupert Friend, and Oscar Isaac.

7 Worst: Charlie Countryman (27%)

Interweaving elements of comedy, drama, and romance, Charlie Countryman tells the dangerous love story of an American tourist (Shia LeBeouf), who falls for the wrong girl (Evan Rachel Wood).

While traveling to Romania, Charlie gets swept up in a fling, only to discover that her ex, Nigel (Mads Mikkelsen), is a violent criminal who does not take their relationship lightly. Despite the intriguing premise, it flopped at the box office and with critics, and scored a dismal 27%.

6 Best: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (84%)

A band of unlikely heroes set off the events that inspire the epic tale of the original Star Wars films, as they work together to try to defeat the evils of the Empire in this film that bridges the sizable gap between the prequels and the original trilogy.

Mads Mikkelsen plays Galen Erso, a brilliant but regretful scientist forced to help the Empire build the Death Star. Often lauded as one of the best Star Wars movies since the 1980s, Rogue One scores an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes.

5 Worst: Clash Of The Titans (27%)

Sam Worthington is caught between the land of the living and the Underworld in a legendary war of the Gods themselves in this 2010 remake starring Gemma Arterton, Liam Neeson, and Ralph Fiennes. Mikkelsen slips into the role of Draco, a member of Perseus’s hopeful band of warriors.

Though it has all the ingredients in the recipe for a fun action-fantasy movie, it was criticized by film critics for being more on the cheesy side than the epic side.

4 Best: Doctor Strange (89%)

Stephen Strange’s life changes forever when a terrible accident causes him to lose both the use of his hands and his career. Doctor Strange is the 14th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with its sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, presently slated for an early 2022 release.

Mikkelsen was thrilled to be offered the role of the supervillain Kaecilius. “I got the phone call of doing a Marvel film and doing flying Kung Fu, it was like ‘Finally!”

3 Worst: Three Musketeers (26%)

Young D’Artagnon (Logan Lerman) sets out on an adventure to achieve his wild dreams of being a Musketeer for the King’s Guard.

Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and based on the classic story written by Alexandre Dumas, this iteration of The Three Musketeers (2011) made a valiant effort, but ultimately fell short, only earning a meager 26% on Rotten Tomatoes.

2 Best: Casino Royale (95%)

Shortly after receiving his license to kill, James Bond, an elite member of the British Secret Service tracks a villainous banker with ties to major terrorist organizations and finds himself taking part in an unexpected high-stakes poker game.

The first Daniel Craig-led Bond film in the franchise, Casino Royale received immense praise from critics and audiences alike, and is presently the highest rated Bond film with Craig at the helm, next to Skyfall.

1 Worst: Polar (19%)

Mads Mikkelsen is not only a talented actor, dancer, and linguist, he is also a huge fan of graphic novels. This is evident in his eagerness to take part in this neo-noir action flick about a soon-to-be-retired assassin, based on a comic series of the same name.

Though the movie is a fun ride and the passion is clearly there, it had some seriously flawed execution which led to it receiving less than a 20% rating.
