Marisa Tomei, who plays Peter Parker’s Aunt May in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, reveals she spoiled Spider-Man: No Way Home’s ending for her therapist. The Oscar-winning actress first appeared as May Parker in Captain America: Civil War, which also featured the debut of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Bypassing Spidey’s origin story and the death of Uncle Ben ala 2002’s Spider-Man and 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, the MCU picked up with a novice Spider-Man and an oblivious Aunt May. Surprisingly, at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming, May discovers her nephew/adoptive son’s identity as Spider-Man.

In Spider-Man: Far From Home’s mid-credits scene, the late Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) exposed Spider-Man’s secret identity and implicated him as a murderer, which is poised to cause Peter, his friends, and family a whole lot of problems in No Way Home. As revealed in the film’s trailers, Peter goes to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) in the hopes that he can undo the reveal of his identity to the world. Thanks to Peter having second thoughts, the subsequent spell goes awry, and cracks open the multiverse, and unleashes many villains from past Sony franchises into the MCU. These baddies include Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Electro (Jamie Foxx), the Sandman, and Lizard. No Way Home will mark Tomei’s fifth MCU appearance in a film shrouded in mystery and heavily rumored to feature Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men.

During a recent interview with Backstage OL, Tomei talked about the intense pressure to keep MCU secrets. Given Marvel Studios’ proclivity for secrecy and so-called “secret police,” who guard and track down leaks, it’s almost impossible for talent to unburden themselves. Unless, of course, it’s in therapy. Saying “I had to be under oath and I had to tell someone,” Tomei revealed, “only my therapist knows the ending” to No Way Home.

Patient privilege legally forbids Tomei’s therapist from revealing anything their client says during a session. Unless Tomei is the first performer to take advantage of this loophole, it’s interesting to think about how many other MCU actors/actresses have told their therapists about Thanos’ snap or Tony Stark’s death (among other things). That being said, Tomei very well may have needed to open up in a safe environment about No Way Home because of the impact it’ll have on her career. A prominent theory/rumor regards at least one major death, and many believe May will be the one to meet her demise. Especially on the big screen, Spider-Man’s “with great power comes great responsibility” story is one of heartbreak and loss.

Much of the hype surrounding No Way Home deals with its multiversal theme and the prospect of paying homage to nostalgia by bringing back Maguire, Garfield, and other beloved characters. Everyone involved with the film (or rumored to be involved) has had to endure an unending array of questions—from Holland, Garfield, and Tomei to the rest of the cast and crew. Who wouldn’t need to talk to their therapist? One thing seems certain: fans may need to talk to someone after seeing No Way Home when it hits theaters on December 17th.
