Marvel Teases Kit Harington Becoming Black Knight In The MCU’s Future

An Eternals producer has teased that Kit Harington becoming Black Knight is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s future. The upcoming Phase 4 movie is scheduled to feature nearly a dozen new superheroes thanks to the superhuman beings known as Eternals. Characters like Sersi (Gemma Chan), Ikaris (Richard Madden), and Thena (Angelina Jolie) will be at the center of Eternals’ story, but Chloé Zhao’s movie is also poised to introduce another future MCU hero.

Former Game of Thrones star Kit Harington was one of the final additions to the Eternals cast, but he isn’t playing a member of the hero team. Harington’s role is instead that of Dane Whitman, a name familiar to Marvel Comics readers. He is better known as Black Knight, a skilled warrior imbued with the power of the Ebony Blade. Dane’s introduction in Eternals has been highly anticipated as a result, but so far he has been a small part of the marketing material. It was previously revealed that Dane is in a romantic relationship with Sersi during the modern-day portion of the movie. His role has otherwise been kept under wraps and left fans to speculate about whether or not he’d officially become Black Knight in Eternals.

As part of an Eternals set visit in January 2020, Screen Rant participated in a round-table interview with producer Nate Moore. During this conversation, Moore was asked about Black Knight’s role in Eternals and his MCU future. The producer confirmed that Whitman “ultimately goes on” to become the Black Knight, but cautioned “he won’t be the Black Knight in our film.” Moore also provided some other teases about Dane’s role and what the movie does and doesn’t set up about him becoming Black Knight. “We think he’s interesting and a great character and actually Kit Harington, who just wrapped yesterday, was fantastic, but we very much explore the relationship between Dane Whitman and Sersi, which is again something for comic readers … you won’t see the Ebony Blade in this movie. He’s not going to be a Black Knight necessarily, but that is something that we get to play with down the road.”

Based on this information, fans might need to change their perception of what Dane’s role in Eternals will be. It seems he will primarily be involved in the story as Sersi’s love interest, making him a supporting character as the film focuses primarily on the Eternals. Harington won’t be the fully-fledged superhero version of Black Knight in Eternals as a result, with Disney even confirming that he will not suit up in the Black Knight armor during the film. The good news for Black Knight fans, though, is that Moore seems to imply that Marvel Studios has plans for Harington to return as Dane and take on a larger role.

Although some might be disappointed that Harington won’t make the full transformation into Black Knight in Eternals, there is great potential for him in the MCU’s future. It wouldn’t be too surprising if Marvel capitalized on Harington’s Game of Thrones star power and gave him a solo project in some form. A Black Knight Disney+ series could be the way the studio chooses to go, depending on what Eternals teases is next for the character. There were also rumors several years ago that a Black Knight and Captain Britain movie was in the works. If Marvel isn’t ready to give Black Knight a solo project, though, Dane could return in Secret Invasion or even join the MCU’s next Avengers team, which would no doubt delight countless eager fans.
