A new character poster for Hawkeye features the Tracksuit Mafia. Hawkeye is the new Marvel Cinematic Universe show on Disney+ starring Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye and Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop. Additional cast members include Vera Farmiga as Eleanor Bishop, Tony Dalton as Jack Duquesne, Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez, and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova.

The new series draws heavily on the Hawkeye comic series from Matt Fraction and David Aja, which places Barton in New York City and eventually teams him up with Kate Bishop, a gifted archer who wants to be just like him. The Disney+ series loosely adapts the comics, serving as a template for the show rather than a direct adaptation. Along with Lucky the Pizza Dog, another group of characters from the comic series to appear in Hawkeye are the Tracksuit Mafia (called “Tracksuit Draculas” in the comic), a group of Ukrainian mercenaries/thugs who get in the hero’s way, starting a bitter feud.

The Tracksuit Mafia show up in the first two episodes of Hawkeye, including members Ivan Banionis (Aleks Paunovic), Tomas Delgado (Piotr Adamczyk), Enrique (Carlos Navarro), and Kazi Kazimierczak aka The Clown (Fra Fee), and now have their own festive character poster from Marvel. The thugs show up to take on Kate early on in the show, believing her to be Ronin after she steals and dons the costume. Barton shows up to give her a helping hand, which makes things even worse with the group of matching bad guys. Check out the poster below:

The Tracksuit Mafia looks to figure continuously throughout the six-episode series, who apparently are being led by none other than Maya Lopez aka Echo, a character first introduced in the pages of Daredevil. Echo is getting her own spinoff show on the streaming service after her appearance/introduction in Hawkeye. In the comics, Echo is deaf and has the ability to copy moves and abilities of others to perfection, having exceptional abilities in martial arts. As per her comics origins, she is also raised by Kingpin (played by Vincent D’Onofrio in Netflix’s Daredevil series) as his daughter, but it has yet to be revealed how closely the Disney+ show will follow that lineage.

It’s great to see Marvel and Disney+ embrace the comic roots of these characters, as that’s what has continued to make the MCU such a successful property. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has always been adamant about culling material from the source (the comics) and while not directly adapting any one storyline throughout the MCU, they’ve smartly worked in elements to retell them in live-action form with great success. Hawkeye’s Tracksuit Mafia may not be major players in the world of the MCU, but even the smallest details can make the biggest difference in adapting these properties, giving them voice and personality that originated on the page.
