Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has finally made its way into the world, and one particular Easter egg in the game proves that the title shares an X-Men link with Insomniac’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. It’s a pretty well-known fact that the more recent Marvel games don’t share a universe with one another. While Marvel’s Avengers and GotG are both published by the same company (Square Enix), both games are standalone experiences not tied down by the plot threads/character decisions of the other.

Insomniac’s Spider-Man games are also their own independent venture from the Square Enix games, only featuring crossover within the Spider-Man universe that Insomniac has established for Spider-Man: Miles Morales and the upcoming Spider-Man 2. Things looks to get a little more expansive in the future, with the developers revealing that the upcoming Wolverine title will take place within the same universe as the Spider-Man stories. There hasn’t been any indication that games like Marvel’s GotG are connected to Insomniac’s Spider-Man series up to this point, but both GotG and Spider-Man: Miles Morales coincidentally feature references to the X-Men character Dazzler that could prove they exist within the same universe.

Dazzler, or Alison Blaire, was introduced into the Marvel comics during the surge of disco music in the 1980s as a pop star with the ability to transform sound into light and energy beams. The character was originally created in an attempt by Marvel to branch out into other forms of media like film and radio, but the attempt eventually failed and Dazzler remained within the pages of the comics. Dazzler went on to become a member of the X-Men, but was rarely seen following the 1980s due to the diminishing popularity of disco music. She remained a fan-favorite throughout her tumultuous history, and this popularity has eventually led to her being referenced in both Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

During the opening chapter of Marvel’s GotG’s long campaign, players are given control of Peter Quill aboard the Milano as the team makes their way towards the Quarantine Zone. Exploring Quill’s quarters offers up a host of different ’80s inspired memorabilia inspired by the era Peter Quill was kidnapped from, including a poster that displays Dazzler in all of her singing glory. She’s wearing a very comic-accurate costume as well to further prove that that it’s her, seemingly confirming that there are mutants out there in the Guardians’ universe.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales’ Dazzler Tickets

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales takes a similar approach to a Dazzler Easter egg by having her feature in a piece of memorabilia. One of the collectible items in Spider-Man: Miles Morales are Time Capsules, mementos from Miles’ pre-Spider-Man days that he and lifelong friend Phin scattered around New York. One of the Time Capsules located in Harlem include a pair of concert tickets, with Miles talking about how Phin convinced him to go see Dazzler/Lila Cheney. The fact that Dazzler was involved in a musical concert and Lila Cheney is notable as another Marvel mutant with teleportation abilities helps prove that the Dazzler being referenced is the mutant from the comics.

The Dazzler references in both games make sense from a character standpoint, considering both Peter Quill and Miles Morales have an affinity for music. This could be the only reason that Eidos Montreal and Insomniac featured the X-Men character in their respective games, with the Dazzler appearances being a fun nod to the wider Marvel world while adding more depth to their protagonists. This specific link to Dazzler and the X-Men could also be the developers laying connections between Marvel’s GotG and Spidey game universes that could blossom into a future crossover down the road if Marvel decides to commit to it. Whatever the case may be, seeing Dazzler in both Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales leaves an exciting possibility for X-Men fans.
