Marvels SpiderMan Sam Raimi Movie Easter Egg Explained

Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4 was a spectacular hit from day one, and it keeps on giving. Early in the game, true Spidey fans may have caught a reference to the Sam Raimi’s original movie with Tobey Maguire, and honestly, it’s exactly the kind of thing Marvel experts would expect from the snarky webslinger.

Originally released in 2018, Marvel’s Spider-Man instantly became a PlayStation favorite, vastly improving upon the franchise’s previous video game iterations. The animation is flawless, allowing players to thwip their way through New York City for hours without respite. Plenty of familiar characters make an appearance in the game, rounding out Peter Parker’s screen time with appearances by Mary Jane, Miles Morales, Aunt May, and several baddies without which Spider-Man just wouldn’t be the same. Additionally, there are several new Spider-Man suits that bring fun and exciting new mechanics to the game as well.

In Marvel’s Spider-Man, Peter Parker works with his Aunt May and Miles at a homeless shelter while pursuing scientific research with Dr. Octavius. Meanwhile, in typical Spider-Man fashion, Peter has to balance his personal life with his masked vigilantism. Marvel’s Spider-Man keeps players busy doing both and even goes so far as to let players occasionally take control of Mary Jane and Miles, ducking around stalking henchmen as they pursue their own goals. It’s a striking game, giving New York City real-world locations a new life in a way which is usually difficult to translate to such quick moving video games.

When Is The Spider-Man Movie Reference?

Very early in Marvel’s Spider-Man, Peter comes face to face with one of his most infamous and larger than life enemies, Wilson Fisk. His empire ravages the city with crime, and Spider-Man goes in for the takedown by infiltrating Fisk’s tower. After a long sequence of stealthy maneuvering and eavesdropping, a fight ensues that doesn’t go easy on new Marvel’s Spider-Man players. Fisk is a formidable opponent, and does not go down quickly. Once players find their groove and beat down Fisk, the fight ends with some exciting cutscenes that launch the game into its main story line.

It is during these cutscenes that players will recognize a callback to the 2002 Sam Raimi movie. Peter envelopes Fisk in a mess of webs and leaves him dangling from the ceiling awaiting police arrival. As Fisk hangs, Peter slowly descends to meet his eye-line upside down, and with a smirk in his voice says, “So should we kiss now?” It’s a direct reference to the moment Mary Jane kisses upside-down Spider-Man in the rain in Sam Raimi’s movie. While a romantic moment in the film, it is a subtle yet hilarious Easter Egg in the game.

With a sequel on the horizon for the PS5, Spider-Man is well on his way to becoming a new standard for excellence in the video game world. In fact, it’s difficult for some players to stay on-mission because the game does so well at maximizing the fun players have swinging through the city of New York. There is sure to be new surprises and challenges as the franchise evolves, but if it stays on its current track disappointment will likely be non-existent. Looking forward, Marvel’s Spider Man has the potential to redefine superhero games into fully immersive experiences that will have games flying off the shelves.
