After Bucky Barnes’ time as the White Wolf in Wakanda, his Vibranium arm now seems to have Black Panther’s ability to absorb and shoot kinetic energy, as seen in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 3. James Buchanan Barnes is enhanced with the Super-Soldier Serum, a bionic arm, and decades of experience as a ruthless assassin. All of this makes Bucky, formerly known as the Winter Soldier, an extremely powerful hero. Although Bucky hasn’t demonstrated his full strength since the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, he has acquired a few upgrades, such as a more stable mind and the Vibranium arm designed by the Wakandan people while he remained in cryostasis.

Like the Winter Soldier, King T’Challa is naturally skilled in hand-to-hand combat, and he also gets his superhuman abilities from a special substance. In the case of the Wakandan king, his powers come from the Heart-Shaped Herb, which links him to the Ancestral Plane and allows him to be the one and only Black Panther. Similar to Bucky, T’Challa wields a great amount of Vibranium, but instead of a solid prosthesis, he wears a Black Panther suit made out of the rare metal. In Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther, Shuri provides her brother with an upgraded suit — this time made out of Vibranium nanotechnology and the ability to store and shoot kinetic energy as a powerful shockwave. It’s an impressive addition and a key example of how the MCU’s superheroes whose abilities rely on equipment continue to receive upgrades over time that grant new powers and abilities to their wielders

Who Is The Wakandan Hunting Zemo? Identity & Previous MCU Movies

In episode 3 of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Baron Zemo takes Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson to the island city of Madripoor, where Bucky finds himself forced to go back to his Winter Soldier persona in order to get information about the mysterious Power Broker. During the fight, when he slams a goon on top of the bar, the stripes on Bucky’s metal arm briefly grow a bright yellow, akin to the patterns in Killmonger’s stolen Black Panther suit, which emitted yellow shockwaves. In hindsight, it makes sense that T’Challa and his fellow Wakandan scientists would share their newest upgrade with Bucky.

T’Challa, Bucky, and Baron Zemo share a common story. The Black Panther and the Winter Soldier started out as mortal enemies because of Zemo’s vengeful scheme in Captain America: Civil War, but Black Panther ended up forgiving Zemo for killing his father, King T’Chaka, and also took Bucky to Wakanda to protect him from himself, which is how he got a new bionic arm as a sign of reconciliation. What Black Panther may not have expected is that Bucky would team up with his father’s killer, and if Ayo’s appearance at the end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 3 is anything to go by, the Wakandans will not overlook that alliance.

As for why Bucky hasn’t used his arm’s new ability in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it’s his new moral code that puts a limit on how violent he can be after he has left his dark past behind. Although Bucky still has the Winter Soldier inside him, he chooses to restrain himself and avoid harming others as much as possible. But eventually, push will come to shove, and if Bucky’s arm really has a Black Panther-style kinetic blast, he may have to resort to it — if that’s the only new feature it has, that is.
