The “Les Enfants Terribles” project is one of the most important events in Metal Gear’s story. Despite it’s importance, however, The Patriots’ attempts at cloning Big Boss never occurs on screen, and is shrouded in mystery as a result. What can be gathered from dialogue and storytelling, however, is that Les Enfants Terribles began sometime between the events of Metal Gear Solid 3 and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

During this period between the 60’s and 70’s, Metal Gear’s favorite anti-hero, Big Boss, cooperated with a secret organization known as The Patriots. Big Boss was one of The Patriots’ founding members, but his loyalty to the group soon waned when certain members suggested cloning him to create an army of super soldiers. Big Boss earned notoriety as the world’s best soldier after killing The Boss, his mentor and mother figure during the events of MGS3. The Boss had faked defecting to the USSR on orders from the U.S. Military, but was ordered to maintain cover and act as a sacrifice in order to prevent a nuclear war. As The Boss’ unwilling executioner, Big Boss didn’t appreciate people treating soldiers like expendable pawns, and so refused The Patriots’ offers to clone him. He left the organization to start his own Private Military Company soon after.

That didn’t stop The Patriots from cloning Big Boss anyway. When Big Boss wound up comatose after his chopper was shot down, The Patriots wasted no time in putting Les Enfants Terribles into action. Taking some of Big Boss’ DNA, The Patriots combined it with two donor eggs from a lab assistant, and Big Boss’ one-time flame, EVA, volunteered to carry the pair of twins to term. These children would eventually become the Twin Snakes: David and Eli (known as Solid and Liquid Snake, respectively). Unbeknownst to them, a third child would also be conceived.

Solid Snake, Liquid Snake, & Solidus Snake

As genetic experiments, Solid Snake and Liquid Snake differed greatly from each other. In an effort to isolate Big Boss’ “Super Soldier Genes,” the patriots manipulated the twins’ genome to make Solid express Big Boss’ dominant traits, while making Liquid express his recessive ones. Believing that Solid received the Super Soldier Genes, Liquid staged the Shadow Moses Incident during the original Metal Gear Solid to inherit Big Boss’ legacy and prove himself the superior twin despite his genetic shortcomings. Solid, who had previously defeated Big Boss, thwarted Liquid’s plot and proved himself Big Boss’ true successor.

Lurking in plain sight, however, was Solid Snake’s other brother, an exact clone of Big Boss named George, AKA Solidus Snake. Solidus was given somewhat of a free ride through his life, doing The Patriots’ dirty deeds and even becoming President of The United States. He raised Metal Gear Solid 2’s protagonist, Raiden, as a child soldier in Liberia. Eventually, Solidus tried to rebel against The Patriots’ control. Unfortunately for him, The Patriots manipulated Raiden into killing Solidus in a sword fight on top of Federal Hall. After this event (and not counting Liquid’s manipulative arm) Solid Snake became the only living descendent of Big Boss.

However, much more than three clones came from The Patriots meddling with Big Boss’ genes. The research they performed using Big Boss and his progeny lead to a wave of genetically-enhanced soldiers, along with many attempts to replicate the psychology and experience that shaped them into Super Soldiers. Despite all of Big Boss’ efforts, soldiers in the Metal Gear universe were still used as nothing more than pawns to be manipulated and sacrificed, including those under his own command.
