Jordan Vogt-Roberts, director of the long-in-development Metal Gear Solid movie, confirms reports that Oscar Isaac will play Solid Snake. Vogt-Roberts is a superfan of the classic video game series created by Hideo Kojima and has been developing a movie adaptation for several years. Derek Connolly has written the script, but there was little news about the adaptation in recent months. That all changed when a report emerged saying Star Wars, Dune, and Ex Machina star Isaac had been cast as Solid Snake, the series’ protagonist.
Vogt-Roberts burst onto the scene with his feature debut, The Kings of Summer, a coming-of-age tale that debuted at Sundance Film Festival and went on to be one of the year’s best-reviewed films. His first big-budget feature was Kong: Skull Island starring Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, and Tom Hiddleston. That movie did solid business at the box office, but Vogt-Roberts hasn’t added any further feature film credits to his name since. Instead, he’s been focused on getting his Metal Gear Solid adaptation off the ground, sharing a host of concept art on Twitter earlier this year. The casting news is the first sign of progress, teasing that the project is advanced enough to set up a shooting date.
Now Vogt-Roberts has confirmed Isaac’s casting reports, sharing an image of him and the actor sitting together. The accompanying caption confirms the casting, using a snake emoji to dispel any confusion. The confirmation from the director himself proves that Isaac’s casting is a done deal. All that needs to be sorted out now is a shooting date. That’s something that might be tricky considering the star is set to appear in Moon Knight sometime next year, which will presumably make him unavailable for several months. Of course, Metal Gear Solid may well be planning to shoot before the Marvel Cinematic Universe TV show, a possibility given Vogt-Roberts has spent such a long time prepping it.
Whether the long-awaited movie finally rolls cameras sooner or later, though, at least fans know who their Solid Snake will be. With this casting news, there should be swift movement casting other roles, which give hints as to what direction the movie’s plot will take, and which of the many Metal Gear Solid games it will adapt. Fans eager to find out should keep an eye on Vogt-Roberts’ Twitter feed, as the director is known for sharing sneak peeks via social media and may well make more announcements via that channel soon.
