In addition to the wide range of blocks in Minecraft, there is lots more to explore and do. As well as raising animals and defeating monsters, you can also craft! There are tons of small gadgets, including the clock, which can be held or used in redstone contraptions.

In this guide, we are going to go over everything you need to know about clocks, including what they are used for and how to make them. First, let’s take a look at how to use this item.

How To Use A Clock

Much like clocks in real life, Minecraft clocks are used to tell the time of day. The face of the clock has a dial, which spins clockwise and shows either a sun or a moon. If the clock is showing a sun directly in the center, that means it is midday. The correct time will be visible from both sides of the clock, as well as if the clock is placed or thrown on the ground.

This may not be the most helpful while you are on the surface, because the sun is visible.

Clocks come in handy went you are underground, where there is no sunlight. If you have spent a few days underground, you may want to keep a clock handy so you know when to sleep. This is helpful if you are worried about being attacked by phantoms when you return to the surface.

Clocks can also be placed into item frames to act as wall clocks. This makes a great decoration for your base, although it may not provide the most functional value.

Combined with a few other materials, you can also make your own grandfather clock. Be sure to check out our guide to making a functioning grandfather clock.

Clocks In Other Dimensions

The day and night cycle does not exist in the End or Nether, so clocks do not work in these dimensions. If you bring a clock to either one of these dimensions, it will begin to rapidly spin, without providing any information.

How To Craft A Clock

To craft a clock, you will need the following materials.

  • 4 Gold Ingot
  • 1 Redstone Dust

These materials are fairly simple to obtain underground. Gold ore can be found at any level, however, you will have a higher chance to find gold between Y=30 and Y=80. Once you find gold ore, mine it with an iron, diamond, or netherite tool. Any other tool will cause the ore to be destroyed. Mining the ore will cause raw gold to drop, which can then be smelted into gold ingot (or bars).

Redstone can also be found deep underground, below Y=16. At this level, you can find large veins of redstone ore, which can be mined with iron, diamond, or netherite tools to drop redstone dust.

That’s all there is to know about clocks. Don’t forget to craft a few to place in item frames around your base!
