Mojang’s annual Halloween celebration within Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons, dubbed Spookyfest, will return this year. The original blocky survival sandbox title released back in 2009, with its dungeon crawler cousin launching in 2020. Developer Mojang continues supporting both titles, with experimental Minecraft snapshots allowing players to experience and test pieces of upcoming content in the main sandbox game.

The latest Minecraft snapshots are leading up to a large update, Caves & Cliffs: Part II, which will make several changes to the game’s large mountains and claustrophobic caves. The first part of the sizable update released back in June 2021 and included new wild mobs to encounter and resources to collect. New mineral blocks, like copper and amethyst, add variety to mining the game’s underground cave systems, while Caves & Cliffs: Part II promises to improve the way that mountains are generated. Temperature clashes between different Minecraft biomes can be unnatural in the game currently, with oddities such as a snowy mountain sitting next to a desert, but the upcoming update will aim to modify the terrain generation system.

Developer Mojang has announced that the Halloween event Spookyfest will return to Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons this October. In Minecraft Dungeons, players will be able to tackle spooky adventures in order to earn some themed loot. October 13 and 19 will introduce new Character Creator items, while a free skin pack will be available on October 26. As for classic Minecraft, real-world merchandise can now be ordered, which in turn unlocks an exclusive in-game skin pack.

The Minecraft franchise has become enormously popular since the original game’s release, and small seasonal offerings help to maintain players interest. Both Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons are kept stocked with fresh updates for players to experience, and the franchise as a whole has continued to evolve over time. Two new Minecraft games are reportedly in development, possibly adding even more variety to the Microsoft property if or when they release. With a survival sandbox title and a dungeon crawler already released, it’s difficult to predict what these two brand-new titles could entail.

This year’s Spookyfest celebration will inject Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons with a bit of Halloween charm. With witches and jack-o-lanterns, the unique quests and rewards added to Minecraft Dungeons will get players in the mood for the fall season. However, Minecraft’s in-game rewards can only be earned by purchasing real-world merchandise from retailers. This sort of promotion is nothing new, but it does tarnish what could have otherwise been a free Halloween celebration.
