A clever Minecraft player has managed to build a functional volcano that actually erupts with fireballs. After a decade of being on the market, the player base for the immensely popular sandbox title still manages to come up with unique build ideas and push the boundaries of what can be done in-game. Mods such as one that makes Minecraft look mysterious again are some of the main contributors for players looking to put a new spin on the best selling video game of all time.

Many of the builds that have become associated with Minecraft’s identity are typically massive in scale and span entire worlds. Recently, however, it seems like a sizable sect of players have tried pushing the game’s boundaries in a different, yet no less impressive, way by creating functional builds. These working machines, often relying on the game’s Redstone mechanic, have been expanding in size and scope, with one player making a working tank in Minecraft thanks to some clever usage of TNT. Now another player has taken things to a different level in scale by building a volcano that actually erupts.

While reddit user Uneavar’s volcano may not look as lifelike as something found in the real world, it still manages to be functional, and actually erupt in a worthy simulation of a real-life volcano. The apparatus that seems to allow it to erupt is completely visible at this current stage in the creation, and complex Redstone mechanics can be seen leading from the volcano to the pressure plate that triggers its eruption. Arrows are shot from the inside of the lava to create fireballs that scatter around the structure after the volcano explodes.

Working volcanos are nothing new in Minecraft, however Uneavar sets theirs apart by the way their creation goes off. It does not appear to employ the same techniques as the popular Vol-carb-o build. That has caused some of the commenters to suggest to Uneavar that they should add some of those mechanics to their creation, combining the two methods for a much more realistic result.

The trouble with functional builds, such as Minecraft map rooms, is that they tend to cause the game to lag more than traditional constructions. In spite of this, however, players are still drawn to build them, and scale remains the name of the game for the popular sandbox title. The Minecraft community will continue to push the boundaries on just how large functional constructs can be, and as gaming hardware improves with each generation, the possibilities of what can be done will constantly expand. This is how Minecraft has managed to maintain its popularity for a decade, and that popularity isn’t likely to fade any time soon.
