Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt has been protecting the country for more than 20 years now in the Mission: Impossible franchise. Though the movies are based on a 1966 TV series, the live-action role of Ethan Hunt belongs only to Tom Cruise. In the movies, Cruise’s character is the top agent of the IMF, a secretive government agency.

Cruise’s Ethan Hunt has been embarking on high-risk missions across six movies now, and is far from being done. Though Cruise was in his 30s when the Mission: Impossible franchise launched, he hasn’t showed any sign of slowing down. Despite his age and the franchise being rooted in action, Cruise is still willing, and eager, to do his own stunts for the movies. An injury during a stunt delayed the production of Mission: Impossible – Fallout, but Cruise recovered and went back to work. Now, the actor is working on two more installments to the big screen. By the time the second of the two, Mission: Impossible 8, hits theaters, Cruise will be at least 60. Here’s how old both Tom Cruise and his character were in all six movies in the series.

Mission: Impossible

Ten years after his breakout role in Top Gun, 34-year-old Cruise starred in 1996’s Mission: Impossible. The movie introduced audiences to Ethan Hunt, a competent agent who had recently joined the IMF. The character, who is two years younger than Cruise himself, was 32 during his first on-screen operation.

Mission: Impossible 2

A newspaper in 2000’s Mission: Impossible 2 confirmed that the sequel jumped forward three years to 1999, which means that Hunt was 35, with Cruise being 37. Though Hunt was a skilled agent before the series even started, he now had a few years of experience with the IMF under his belt.

Mission: Impossible III

The biggest gap between installments in the franchise came with Mission: Impossible III, which didn’t release until 2006 when Cruise was 44. Set in the same year that the film released, the movie focused on a 42-year-old Ethan Hunt.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

When Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol teamed Hunt with Jeremy Renner’s William Brandt in 2011, many were under the impression that the franchise was getting ready to retire Cruise’s character and replace him with Renner’s. With Cruise and Hunt being 49 and 47 respectively, it did seem like a possible move, but it didn’t ultimately happen. Cruise held onto the leading role.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation brought back a 53-year-old Cruise to play Ethan Hunt for a fifth time. Hunt, 51, began his battle with the organization called the Syndicate in Rogue Nation. True to form, Cruise did his own stunts in a number of memorable action sequences.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout

The latest movie in the series, 2018’s Mission Impossible – Fallout took place two years after Hunt’s first bout with the Syndicate in 2015. It was during the production of this film that the 55-year-old action star badly hurt his leg while jumping between buildings for a scene. As for Hunt, he was 53 during the events of the film.
