Nickelodeon has announced a live-action adaptation of Mattel’s Monster High doll franchise. Introduced in 2010, the Monster High doll franchise includes characters inspired by monsters of all different origins placed in a high school setting. The cast of creatures includes classic monsters like werewolves, vampires, and sea monsters, as well as contemporary spooky icons like Pennywise and the twins from The Shining. Similarly to Barbie and American Girl, two other Mattel properties, Monster High includes fashion and dress-up elements in addition to core stories about the characters.

The franchise was launched with an animated web series released on YouTube in 2010. The release of the web series later resulted in the franchise getting a number of animated, straight-to-video movies and television specials which were broadcasted on Nickelodeon. Since their introduction in 2010, the Monster High brand had a reboot in 2016, which included updated doll designs and animated content. In the same year, a live-action Monster High film was announced with Universal, but the film never progressed beyond that. Early in 2021, Mattel announced their ambition to relaunch the brand, yet again, with new content including an animated Monster High series and a live-action film.

Today, Nickelodeon issued a press release stating the Monster High live-action movie is moving forward with an expected release set for 2022. The feature length movie will be a musical and will incorporate the characters which originated the franchise: Clawdeen Wolf (Miia Harris) daughter of a werewolf, Frankie Stein (Ceci Balagot), daughter of Frankenstein’s monster; Draculaura (Nayah Damasen), daughter of Dracula; Lagoona Blue (Lina Lecompte), daughter of a sea monster; Cleo de Nile (Jy Prishkulnik), daughter of the mummified Pharaoh Ramses de Nile; and Goulia Yelps (Lilah Fitzgerald), daughter of a zombie; and many others. Production for the movie will take place in Vancouver, Canada with the tentative title of Monster High. Read the full synopsis below:

Monster High follows Clawdeen Wolf, who was born half human and half werewolf, after she arrives at her new school, Monster High. She quickly makes friends with her classmates Frankie Stein and Draculaura, and for the first time in her life, Clawdeen feels like she has finally found a place where she fits in and can truly be herself, despite keeping her human half a secret. When a devious plan to destroy Monster High threatens to reveal her real identity, Clawdeen must learn to embrace her true monster heart and find a way to save the day.

Mattel is not new to content creation. Mattel Film has produced series based on their brands Barbie, Masters of the Universe, American Girl, and Hot Wheels in the past and continue to make content for many others. Among their latest projects, is a live-action Barbie adaptation to be directed by Greta Gerwig (Little Women) and staring Birds of Prey star, Margot Robbie. Mattel has many films based on their properties on the air right now, including Hot Wheels with Warner Brothers, American Girl and Polly Pocket with MGM, and Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots with Universal, all of which are to be live-action.

The new Monster High film seems to be a priority for Mattel, considering it was announced earlier this year and has already seen progress towards production. Compared to other films like Hot Wheels and American Girl, Monster High seems right on track for its targeted release date. One of the most intriguing aspects of the Monster High franchise is its interest in inclusivity. The characters are diverse, not only in species of monster or creature, but also in their representation of different cultures and heritages seen in real life. The cast list having people of color demonstrates an invested interest in maintaining that goal of the brand. It will be interesting to see how that is translated further into the film.
