1. Grand Theft Auto V

TheGamer News Teams Games Of The Decade

I didn’t need to get Grand Theft Auto V on PC, considering I had already been satisfied enough during my time spent in-game on the PlayStation 3 (and eventually again on the PlayStation 4). However, the decision quickly became a phenomenal one when soon, all of my time – over 600 hours to date – went to Grand Theft Auto Online. The stability that online play finally provided made GTA my go-to PC title, which I can still be found playing at least once a week.

Love it or hate it, the staying power and continued relevance of a game launched in 2004 cannot be ignored.

1. Persona 5

It’s easy to get tired of playing a long JRPG, but this never happened to me when playing Persona 5. When I saw the end credits rolling after 80 hours of play, I was furious that my time with the Phantom Thieves was already over. Persona 5 has an amazing story, engaging characters, a fast-paced and satisfying battle system, and a soundtrack that will never leave your head. The only question now is whether Persona 5 Royal can top it.

1. Nier: Automata

This decade changed me – and video games were a huge part of that. I started 2010 aspiring to maybe, someday write about video games as a side gig. Now, I end 2019 as an editor for what has become my favorite gaming publication on the web. I entered the decade a confused, sad teen, and leave it as a woman who’s starting to get a sense of who she is. Through these five games, I figured out my worldviews, my perspectives, my values, and so much more. The five titles here, plus the runner-ups, are the ones that pushed me to higher heights, deeper depths, and ultimately forged me into the person I am today. I wouldn’t be who I am without these games. Nier: Automata, in particular, reminded me why I picked up a controller in the first place and gave me a renewed sense of purpose in my own existence. It instantly became my all-time favorite, and will likely remain it for a good while to come. (Honorable mentions: VA-11 HALL-A, Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright, Shin Megami Tensei IV, The Missing: JJ Macfield and The Island Of Memories)

1. Minecraft

TheGamer News Teams Games Of The Decade

Minecraft has become an inspiration and a trendsetter for sandbox games, proving that good gameplay goes a long way. It sparks creativity, encourages experimentation, and is quite simply enjoyable for all. Thanks to mods, the possibilities are literally endless and the game has universal appeal. It has brought together families, including my own, who enjoy playing together. No microtransactions, no DLC, just reasonably priced gaming that’s freely updated. Perfect.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Hyrule has never been more beautiful. From the second Link wakes up, I knew I was in for something special. The Zelda series has always found ways to innovate, but Breath of the Wild takes the franchise to new heights. Giving players the most extensive open-world experience to date, you’d be hard-pressed to find a portion of this game that isn’t enjoyable. Clearing Shrines, conquering Divine Beasts, or helping citizens with the many side quests, this new version of Hyrule raises the bar not only for the series, but for all of gaming.

2. God of War

1. The Last of Us

TheGamer News Teams Games Of The Decade

The Last of Us was a leap forward for games on the same level as Half-Life 2 and Super Mario 64. The history books will point to The Last of Us as the game that brought AAA narrative to a cinema-quality standard, and pushed the entire industry forward in terms of performance, motion capture, writing, and AI. The Last of Us defines gaming in the 2010s. It is a functionally flawless game that took monumental risks that we now take for granted after so many have followed in its footsteps.

2. The Last of Us

1. Red Dead Redemption

TheGamer News Teams Games Of The Decade

Red Dead Redemption is quite possibly the greatest open-world game ever made. There’s so much to explore and do, and every location feels alive and full of personality. I feel more affection for my horses than I have for most people. Factor in one of the best and most complete stories Rockstar has ever told along with one of their absolute best characters and you have the best game of the 2010s.

First of all, I suspect that my fifth choice may be controversial, but that’s a conversation for another list. With that out of the way, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an open-world game unlike any I’ve ever played. The amount of choices and options that the player has to tackle the problems in Hyrule is seemingly infinite. To this day, I continue to be amazed by the world and how it allows the player to use it. I still wish that Zelda was playable, but that’s probably a conversation for another list too.

3. Ace Combat 7

2. Destiny 2

1. Warframe

TheGamer News Teams Games Of The Decade

Warframe is this weird anomaly among games – a free-to-play, self-published blockbuster that actually, truly made it. It’s both technically brilliant in its presentation and an absolute blast in every game mode. You will never feel more powerful, more fearless, and more in-tune with your character than when you play Warframe. I guarantee it.

2. Minecraft

1. Fortnite

TheGamer News Teams Games Of The Decade

As much as I hate to admit it, Fortnite takes the cake on this one. Since the game’s release in 2017, Epic Games has taken the lead in the industry with its flagship title. Popularizing in-game events, Epic has stretched the limits regarding the amount of content a studio can continually release for a single game. In North America, Fortnite has become a cultural catalyst, serving as the medium-of-choice by most of the world’s biggest streamers.

1. Super Mario Maker

Super Mario Maker is all my school notebooks, circa 1995-2000, made into a game. Or maybe not even a game – a doodle pad, just something to let my imagination run wild on. Its sequel, somehow, does so much more.
