10 Most Tragic: Eri’s Sacrifice To Protect Deku And Mirio

During their work-study under Nighteye, Deku and Mirio make sure that their city is safe. That’s when Eri comes running out of nowhere and fearfully holds on to Deku. This is the first time the anime shows Eri and Deku together. Moreover, it’s also the first time Overhaul and Deku come face to face.

Even after being under strict orders to play it cool around Overhaul, Deku and Mirio almost attack him when they realize that Eri’s life is in grave danger. But that’s when Eri realizes that they stand no chance against Overhaul’s quirk. So she selflessly walks back to Overhaul to save the two boys and in turn, seals her fate—she becomes Overhaul’s secret weapon.

9 Most Adorable: Eri Meets Deku For The First Time

What makes Eri’s first sacrifice so tragic is how adorably she looks up to Deku and Mirio when she meets them for the first time. Being the little innocent girl that she is, she does not see the world in black and white. And yet, she is able to differentiate between Overhaul and Deku’s intentions. That explains why despite having no clue who he is, she clutches Deku in her arms and hopes that he’ll protect her.

When Eri watches Deku succumbing to his injuries, she decides to go back to Overhaul, still innocently believing that he’ll fix things back to normal. Eri’s harrowing backstory reveals she isn’t Overhaul’s daughter. Instead, she is the granddaughter of Shie Hassaikai’s boss and was abandoned by her own mother after she accidentally made her father disappear.

Kai Chisaki took advantage of this and subjected her to several brutal experiments. He misused her abilities to create quirk-destroying bullets, and in turn, made her a fearful, secluded girl who believed she brought misfortune to everyone.

One of the uplifting moments of My Hero Academia is when Eri helps Midoria reach his full potential. Even when Lemillion falls to the ground, Eri holds onto her remnant bits of hope. She grabs the fallen hero’s cape and joins forces with Deku.

Using her ability to rewind, Eri helps Deku heal from the recoil of One of All, and together, the two defeat Overhaul. This not only saves Eri from Overhaul’s wrath but also makes her realize that her quirk is a blessing; not a curse.

4 Most Tragic: Eri Gets A Fever

After saving the day and defeating her tormentor, Eri becomes unconscious and gets a high fever. While the operation to rescue her ends on a positive note, she still suffers from immense trauma.

Due to this, she is kept quarantined in the vicinity of a hospital, while the heroes wait for her to regain consciousness. Even when she finally wakes up, nothing is as it used to be. Several heroes have lost their lives and everyone’s glum after Nighteye’s demise.

3 Most Adorable: Deku And Mirio Try To Cheer Her Up

Before Eri starts blaming herself, Deku and Mirio take it upon themselves to cheer her up. Once her energy levels are down, the two boys meet her at the hospital and remind her that she is not to blame.

When she innocently apologizes for everything that they had to go through, Mirio tells her that it’s not her fault. Never has been. The boys realize that she is still far from being rescued. Overhaul is still somewhere in the back of her head, torturing her. However, they feel grateful that she’s finally on her road to recovery.

2 Most Tragic: Eri Forgets How To Smile

Eri’s past trauma weighs her down. After being abandoned by her own mother and constantly being told that she brings bad luck to everyone, she forgets how to smile.

This concerns Deku and Mirio because as much as they want her to smile again, they feel helpless. They want her to have a normal childhood, but they realize that she might never have that because of Overhaul’s psychological influence on her.

1 Most Adorable: Eri Learns To Smile Again

Deku eventually comes up with an idea to make Eri smile again. With the U.A. High School Festival around the corner, he asks principal Nezu if he can bring Eri to the festival. The principal agrees and Deku prepares for the festival along with all other students of Class 1-A.

When the day of the festival arrives, Eri’s eyes glow with excitement. And all it takes is Class-1A’s lively dance performance to free her from Chisaki’s demon. She joyously smiles for the time and finally gets the childhood she deserves.
