My Hero Academias All For One Reveal Makes Shigaraki Even More Tragic

Warning: contains spoilers for My Hero Academia Vigilantes chapter 11!

The My Hero Academia spin-off series My Hero Academia Vigilantes has just revealed what may be one of All For One’s most depraved acts, and it shows just how dark Shigaraki’s future might have been had he not been deemed the villain’s successor.

As the face-off between the prototype Nomu Number Six and Koichi (AKA the Crawler) continues in chapter 111, readers are finally given a glimpse into the nameless villain’s history. Six’s past has been tightly concealed; it has been clear for a while that he had some kind of connection to All For One, and that he was a created being. The most consistent aspect of Six’s characterization is that he has a desperate desire to define himself, but so far that’s something he’s only been able to do in contrast with others, such as basing his appearance on Koichi’s, or his drive to surpass the original owner of the Overclock quirk, the High-Speed Hero: O’Clock.

In Six’s flashback to his past, All For One and Doctor Garaki (inventor of the Quirk Singularity Theory) are seen observing a featureless sack-boy with only a number 6 marking to identify him. Garaki seems to view Six as a failure, stating that he wouldn’t make a suitable successor for All For One as he completely lacks a sense of self. It’s stated this is due to a congenital brain defect, something that’s beyond even their ability to heal. All For One disagrees, however, and offers the young Six a choice of many different quirks that he’s stolen. Six, of course, chooses Overclock – an interesting choice, given that it enhances the brain’s processing power.

Aside from the obvious look into how Six became the character he is, this scene also offers a chilling view of what All For One and Garaki were up to prior to the beginning of My Hero Academia. It’s now known from the main series that All For One’s “Successor” is actually meant to become a new body for the aged and injured All For One. While the Nomu are now mindless henchmen, it appears that the original purpose of the Nomu was to craft an artificial body capable of handling multiple quirks for All For One to use. It’s also known that Nomu are made from human bodies, and Six’s designation would suggest that there were at least five other children transformed into Nomu, if not more. Had Shigaraki not been deemed an acceptable protege, he may well have wound up as a Nomu too.

While All For One has some truly horrific deeds to his name, transforming children into his minions is a new level of cruelty. It’s also interesting to note how the series of reveals in My Hero Academia and Vigilantes have continually reinforced each other in this way – without the reveal about All For One’s intentions towards Shigaraki, this wouldn’t have been quite as ominous as it’s meant to be. And although it may be a bit late to try to look at Six as a victim the way Shigaraki is often seen, it certainly adds one more reason for fans to eagerly anticipate All For One’s eventual demise in My Hero Academia.
