Earthbending is a very impressive form of bending that develops over the course of the Avatar franchise. Some Earth battles in particular stand out.

The Avatar universe has a lot of incredible earthbenders within it. This form of bending doesn’t show up very often until book two of The Last Airbender, but when it does, it’s literally and figuratively earth-shattering.

Over the series, there have been numerous earthbending battles. All of them are great, but the techniques, the talent of the fighters, and the emotional stakes of the scene all factor into how good any given battle is. Accordingly, certain earthbending fights stand out as the best of them all.

10 Lin Vs. The Equalists – “Turning The Tides”

When a large number of Equalists attack Air Temple Island, Lin battles them all by herself. She uses her metal whips to throw her enemies into one another, and summons a number of rocky pillars up from the ground to send more Equalists flying.

The fight is emotional to watch because viewers feel how panicked Lin is, despite her stony glare. She’s protecting the last remaining airbenders in the world, and even though she has bad blood with Tenzin and Pema, she guards Air Temple Island with her life. She gets electrocuted at the end of the fight, but not without showing just how skilled she is at bending.

9 Toph Vs. Fire Nation Airship – “Sozin’s Comet: Parts 3 And 4”

By this point in the series, Toph, the greatest ever earthbender in Avatar, was the only person in the world able to metalbend, so the Fire Nation probably didn’t expect her to bend their metal airships to her advantage.

Toph helps Sokka and Suki take over an airship by creating an armored suit from the door that she kicks down, and she throws metal into the crew within the control room, subduing them all. Toph then bends the ship’s wing, causing the ship to veer off course and crash. That such a small kid is able to create such destruction will always be incredible to watch for Avatar fans.

8 Aang Vs. Bumi – “The King Of Omashu”

Being a King in the Earth Kingdom, Bumi is an incredibly powerful earthbender, When he first fights Aang in Omashu, Aang assumes that because Bumi is an old man, he will be easy to fight. But Bumi proves him wrong, sending rocks crashing and flying into Aang, who barely has time to dodge the attacks, let alone strike back. The fight is also tense, because it seems like Sokka and Katara will be completely encased in crystals unless Aang wins the fight.

This battle ultimately leads to the reveal of Bumi being Aang’s childhood friend, which is a lovely twist after all the tense action.

7 Toph Vs. Xin Fu And Master Yu – “The Guru”

When Toph gets captured by Xin Fu and Master Yu to be sent back to her parents, she literally invents a new type of bending to win this fight. She metalbends the box that she is stuck in, and when the two men come to check on her, she earthbends them straight into the same box, trapping them there.

She cries out, “I am the greatest earthbender in the world, and don’t you two dunderheads ever forget it!” Toph’s resilience and confidence in her own skill make every fight that she’s in epic. It’s clear why this is Toph’s best episode of Avatar.

6 Lin Vs. Suyin – “Old Wounds”

There’s nothing like a bit of sibling rivalry, and the two Beifong sisters give a great fight to show for it. After holding grudges against each other for years, the two earthbenders reach a boiling point, and begin hurling rocks at one another. This is the first time we see Suyin properly fight, and she is able to give Lin a run for her money.

The fight is interesting to watch as viewers can feel the anger that Lin has been repressing for years. The fight also has funny moments, such as when Huan’s sculpture gets destroyed in the crossfire, only for him to think that it looks better.

5 Toph Vs. The Boulder – “The Blind Bandit”

This fight is the first time viewers see Toph in action, and she certainly makes an impression. The audience gets an insight into Toph’s powerful techniques when she senses the vibrations that her opponent makes and attacks accordingly.

In this Earth Rumble battle, she is fighting the Boulder, someone who has been built up throughout the episode. But she takes him down in a single move, using a foot stamp to knock him into a split, which is incredibly painful to watch. She sends him flying out of the ring, and this is the moment that Aang realizes that he has found his earthbending teacher.

4 Bolin Vs. Ghazan – “Venom Of The Red Lotus”

Lavabending was introduced in The Legend of Korra , and it’s an incredible earthbending technique in Avatar. Throughout the third season, Ghazan uses it to get the advantage on his opponents, as it seems that no one else has been able to master the skill. Until Bolin.

Bolin had been struggling throughout season three, as he was attempting to be a metalbender but failing. So it is great to see him realize that his true calling is lavabending. The two battle it out in an intense match in the season finale. They throw lava back and forth, and it looks incredible. The fight is also emotionally dramatic too, as Ghazan ends the fight by burying himself in lava to escape arrest.

3 The Gaang Vs. The Earth Kingdom – “The Earth King”

The Earth Kingdom Palace is a place with many facts about it, and it is a great location for a fight. The Gaang has to fight off an army of earthbenders to even get there. This results in an epic battle where giant statues are thrown and destroyed, stairs are turned into slides, and the Gaang moves past hoards of guards strategically.

The fight is non-stop, with missiles exploding onto the screen in the first few moments of the episode and not stopping until the Gaang is right in front of the Earth King. This makes it exhilarating to watch, and it’s great to see every member of the Gaang use their own skills to make their plan work.

2 Suyin Vs. Kuvira – “Operation Beifong”

When Kuvira takes half of the Beifong’s hostage, the other half must break them out. During this escape operation, Suyin battles Kuvira on top of the newly built death ray that Kuvira has built. The fight is fast-paced and has intricate choreography. Suyin flips herself over Kuvira, bends metal armor over herself, and kicks of a piece of railing to wield as a baton.

Kuvira manages to get the upper hand by turning her own armor into a sword and using metal whips to throw Suyin about like a rag doll. The fight ends with a surprise appearance by Toph, who manages to show why the Beifongs are as revered as they are.

1 Toph Vs. Earth Rumble – “The Blind Bandit”

Toph is obviously the best earthbender in all of Avatar, and this is proven from her very first episode. In “The Blind Bandit,” she manages to take out a large group of skilled earthbenders single-handedly. She uses her different way of seeing to her advantage by creating a smokescreen over her and her opponents, so only she can see what’s happening. This allows her to separate them all, so she can take them down one by one.

She is able to predict her opponents’ movements and react accordingly, sending each man flying across the Earth Rumble stadium and crashing into one another. The rest of the Gaang can only watch in awe, just like the show’s audience.
