In the wake of Abby’s voice actress receiving hate messages and death threats from people who despised the character in The Last of Us Part II, Naughty Dog issued a public statement addressing the whole situation.

As one would expect, the studio condemns any forms of abuse and threats towards the voice actress (or any employee for that matter), and states how everyone needs to work together in order to put a stop to the problem. “Although we welcome critical discussion, we condemn any form of harassment […],” Naughty Dog wrote in a post on its official Twitter account. “Their safety is our top priority, but we must all work together to root out this type of behavior […].”

Naughty Dog wasn’t the only account to speak out against the harassment of its employees over The Last of Us Part II. The game’s director, Neil Druckmann, took the time to talk about the harassment and threats that he received from angry players because he felt that it was “important to expose” them. Additionally, Druckmann wrote how it’s perfectly normal to hate or to love a game and have an opinion about it, unless it’s very extreme and full of hate.

Such behavior in the gaming community, although rare, still tends to happen from time to time. For example, last year, Overwatch’s Brigitte’s voice actress experienced similar harassment when angry fans sent her hate messages because the hero was seen as too powerful and not well-balanced. Although the voice actress had nothing to do with the hero’s development and game design, she was still on the receiving end of all the hate – a similar situation that happened with Abby’s voice actress.

On the bright side, when it comes to situations like these, there are more positive and supportive comments than hateful ones. Insulting and threatening people in general will not get the haters anywhere, only portray them in a negative light and call them out for making such remarks. Furthermore, writing hate-filled messages directed at the wrong people, along with not making any logical sense, can be seen as somewhat childish and even ignorant.
