In preparation for the release of the newest installment of the Scream franchise, Neve Campbell has opened up about how her character, Sidney Prescott, has changed since audiences last saw her. The Scream franchise has been scaring its massive fanbase for almost twenty-five years since the first film was released in 1996. As each film acts as a deconstruction of the horror genre, each film in the series is presented as a critique on different elements a franchise may have, such as sequels, trilogies, and reboots.
Each of the current four films in the series follows the character of Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) as she fights against a mysterious killer in a ghost mask bent on ending her life. One of the most significant differences between each installment is how Sidney has changed from film to film. When audiences were first introduced to Sidney, she was a high school student dealing with the loss of her mother. Since then, audiences have seen her as a college student dealing with PTSD (Scream 2), a recluse who lives alone in the woods (Scream 3), and most recently, a successful writer who is ready to fight back against a new iteration of “Ghostface” (Scream 4).
In a recent article from GamesRadar+, Neve Campbell gave hints about how Sidney has changed between Scream 4 and the newest Scream installment. While Campbell was hesitant to give many details, she did reveal that Sidney is now a mother, which she describes as “another level of strength as a woman.” Campbell has also stated that Sidney is living a happy life away from Woodsboro, where Scream and Scream 4 took place. Campbell then said that she couldn’t reveal any more. See her full quote below:
“Sidney is now a mother. So another level of strength as a woman. She’s living out of her hometown. She lives away. And she has a happy life. And that’s all I can tell you!”
Campbell did reveal, however, that Sidney was almost not in the film. According to Campbell, she had said goodbye to the character after the death of director Wes Craven (who directed the first four installments). It was only after a heartfelt letter sent by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the new film’s directors, that the actor decided to return. After reading the letter, Campbell stated that it just felt like the right fit.
While many fans are hesitant to accept a new film in the franchise that is not helmed by Craven, it is comforting to know that the original stars are optimistic about the project. However, fans still do not know what to expect. The film is being marketed only as Scream (with no “5”), and many of the other actors are just as tight-lipped as Campbell. It seems fans have no choice but to wait and see what has become of their favorite franchise when Scream hits theatres in 2022.
