New Faster Pandemic Game Limits The Action To North America

Originally released in 2008, Pandemic – designed by Matt Leacock – is a cooperative RPG board game that tasks players with finding cures to the four diseases that have broken out around the world before they wipe out the entire human population. Sound little too on the nose right now? Well, it’s about to get worse (or better, if you’re already a fan of the original game).

Asmodee – a publisher of board games, card games, role-playing games, and video game versions of all of the above – has released new content set within the world of the Pandemic universe, but is narrowing the focus of the game to allow for a more streamlined version of the original game. Entitled, Pandemic: Hot Zone – North America, PDF files for the game can be downloaded free of charge right now.

Just like in the original game, Pandemic: Hot Zone – North America will require players to work together to discover the cures of three diseases that are threatening to wipe out North America (as if one wasn’t enough). Players will need to use their characters’ strengths as they travel across the country, preventing outbreaks and searching for a cure, with cooperation and communications being the ultimate keys to success.

Although Pandemic: Hot Zone – North America is just a condensed one-shot, it’s incredibly generous of Asmodee to offer up some games that are free-to-play when most of the world is still stuck inside from the COVID-19 pandemic. It makes sense though, considering Asmodee’s mantra right now is, “Offers Free ‘Print & Play’ Downloadable Board Games For Families To Enjoy While Staying at Home.”

Regardless of the subject matter, at the very least, Pandemic: Hot Zone – North America will give people something else to do while sheltering in place, while possibly even introducing tabletop RPG gameplay to those who might not otherwise ever play such a thing. While it would be ideal to play with someone who is at least a little familiar with the original Pandemic, for newbies, just take your time and read through the instructions thoroughly. It’s a lot less complicated than it looks.
