Square Enix has released more screenshots from Final Fantasy VII Remake, including closer looks at the summon monsters, Red XIII, and a new side-quest system.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is a retelling of the Midgar section of the original game, which will expand on the first few hours of the original story. Some of the changes to the game include bringing the summon monsters into the story from the beginning (instead of introducing them at the Chocobo Farm), expanding the story of AVALANCHE’s battle against Shinra, and adding a new foe in the form of shadowy monsters that appear to be under Sephiroth’s command.

The official PlayStation.blog website has been updated with new information and screenshots from Final Fantasy VII Remake. The first two entries introduce Red XIII and Hojo, with brief explanations of their role in the story. The second segment explains Tifa Lockhart’s combat abilities and how the player is able to swiftly combo attacks together by hammering the square button and pressing the triangle button to perform unique attacks. Tifa’s ATB is filled whenever she hits enemies and when it fills, she can perform special attacks that deal a lot of damage to the enemy.

The screenshots also show off the Materia in the game. The Healing Materia contains restorative spells (like Cure, Cura, and Regen), while the Deadly Dodge Materia allows the player to perform a powerful attack after dodging an enemy move.

In Final Fantasy VII, Cloud starts out as a mercenary before joining AVALANCHE. This is reflected in Final Fantasy VII Remake through a new sidequest system called “Mercenary Quests.” It’s possible for Cloud to help out people in Midgar in exchange for rewards. There is also a teenage researcher named Chadley who will provide Cloud with special Materia if he can help him complete Battle Reports, which involve performing specific tasks.

The screenshots also show off the three summon monsters that the player can earn through purchasing various editions of the game. The people who pre-order any edition of the game will gain the Chocobo Chick summon, the people who pre-order the Digital Deluxe Edition will gain the Carbuncle summon, while the people who pre-order the Deluxe Edition, Digital Deluxe Edition, or 1st Class Editions of the game will receive the Cactuar summon.

There were many people who were unhappy with the revelation that Final Fantasy VII Remake is only covering a small section of the original story, but the new content that has been revealed so far suggests that Square Enix is living up to its claim that it will be the length of a full game.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will be available for PlayStation 4 on April 10, 2020.
