New Girl gets sentimental quite easily, but this sitcom is especially so when it comes to the wedding proposals all throughout. How do they rank?

When sitcoms center around characters of a certain age, talk in the shows inevitably turn to marriage. Friends even starts off with Rachel running away from her own wedding. Even Modern Family sees one of the original children of the series marry and have kids by the end. In New Girl, only three episodes in, the roommates attend a wedding of one of Nick’s law school classmates. Weddings, sitcoms would have the audience believe, are inevitable.

Of course, if a sitcom features a lot of weddings, it stands to reason said sitcom would also feature plenty of wedding proposals. In the case of New Girl, some of them are just casual mentions, some are extensively planned, and then there’s one that doesn’t actually propose marriage. The most sentimental tend to be the most memorable for the series.

9 Shivrang Proposes To Cece (Twice)

When the audience meets Shivrang, they know his relationship with Cece isn’t going to work out. It doesn’t matter how determined Cece is to make it work or how much Schmidt regresses to childlike behavior in the face of their impending nuptials. Shivrang’s proposal to Cece pretty much seals the deal.

When the two decide they want to get serious, Shivrang takes a call from a relative to make sure their arranged match is approved. After, he simply asks Cece if she wants to “do this thing,” which makes her pause. There’s no sentimentality, no rush of emotions for her. Though he proposes again on a stage with the same words and she agrees, it’s at a party for Nick and Schmidt, which just seems to be in poor taste.

8 McTavish Proposes To Jess

Jess spends an evening with a football player in the second season. She’s in a bit of a dating slump, and despite Winston’s warnings, she still pursues him. McTavish takes their relationship from 0 to 100 in just one date.

He piggy backs on Shivrang’s proposal to Cece, also at Nick and Schmidt’s party. The only reason he slightly outranks Shivrang is because it’s clear McTavish is a romantic. He falls fast, and he wants the world to know it. Jess might not be on board, but he sweetly talks her up after only just meeting her. If they’d dated longer, he probably would have planned out a pretty lavish proposal for her.

7 Aly Proposes To Winston

The audience can’t fault Aly for her lack of sentimentality in her proposal. She’s a practical person who understands she and Winston are in it for the long haul. Aly doesn’t take the time to think about her words, just asks him if they should just get married already.

Unfortunately for Aly, Winston doesn’t give her an answer because he’s been planning a long path to proposing himself. His proposal is certainly more memorable than hers, so she doesn’t make it to the top.

6 Bob Proposes To Ashley

One of Jess’ dad’s visits to the loft includes his new girlfriend. Said girlfriend happens to be someone Jess and Cece went to high school with. The entire situation is awkward and makes for great comedy, but it also ends in one of the strangest marriage proposals New Girl has.

Just as Ashley is sure the two need to break up because Jess can’t handle the idea of her dad and her former classmate together, Jess gets on board with their relationship. She tries to stop Ashley from leaving, which means she gets run over by a bunch of cyclists while encouraging her dad to profess his love and propose. It might not be the most sentimental of the bunch, but it’s definitely one of the most memorable.

5 Paul Proposes To Jen

When it comes to awkward proposals, Jess finds herself in quite a few of them over the course of the show. When Jess backslides to her old boyfriend Paul, she ends up in one of the worst predicaments of her life. She discovers Paul already has a girlfriend, one he plans on asking to marry him.

Paul feels so guilty about spending the night with Jess, he confesses to Jen, but Jess is determined to make sure Paul and Jen have their happy ending. She, as she did with her father, encourages Paul to propose and for Jen to examine her feelings for him.

4 Schmidt Proposes To Nick

Though Nick and Jess might be endgame for the show, one of the best friendships in the show is hands down Schmidt and Nick. Schmidt might not propose marriage to Nick, but he does propose that Nick gets involved in his wedding.

There’s likely no question in the minds of viewers Nick will be Schmidt’s best man and Jess will be Cece’s maid of honor when the two get married, but Schmidt makes it official. He gets down on one knee in a place in the loft where the group has had some of their most serious conversations: the bathroom. It’s there he asks for Nick to become his best man. The heartfelt moment is, of course, broken by Nick hesitating to say yes.

3 Winston Proposes To Aly

Winston’s proposal ranks so high because, despite him not getting to do everything exactly as he plans, he does have an extensive plan. He wants to do a whole list of romantic things for Aly before he even gets to the actual proposal. When Winston is surprised by Aly wanting to marry him, he speeds up the process and enlists Jess to give him a hand.

His proposal involves getting Aly to the location of the first case they worked together and dressing as a bobcat since he can’t get a real bobcat to recreate the case. It almost ends in Winston and Jess getting arrested, but luckily, Aly realizes what’s happening.

2 Nick Proposes To Jess

Much like Winston, Nick knows well in advance he wants to propose to Jess. The trouble is, unlike Winston, Nick isn’t entirely sure how to go about doing it. It takes him months to make a decision, and when he does, everything goes wrong.

Nick ends up chasing Jess down (who is chasing down the dog they’re about to adopt), only to meet up with her in a park where Dirty Dancing is screening as an outdoor movie. He proposes to her in front of the same movie she watched on a loop when she first met him as she mourned a big breakup. It’s a full circle moment for them, even if it isn’t how Nick intended to propose.

1 Schmidt Proposes To Cece

Schmidt’s proposal to Cece ranks as the most sentimental. It’s definitely not planned. In fact, Schmidt and Cece aren’t even together when it happens. Instead, the two are only just admitting how they feel about one another long after their second breakup.

When Schmidt intends to track Cece down to tell her he still loves her, he runs right into Cece at the door of the loft. In flashback, the audience sees the first five dollars Schmidt had to put in the jar is because Schmidt told Cece upon meeting her he would marry her. He says the same exact thing as the two decide to get back together – and get married. It’s not a conventional wedding proposal, but it perfectly fits the two of them.
