Apple’s latest 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops see the return of expansion ports, something sorely missed by many users. As beautiful and slick as a MacBook Pro is, a hub hanging off the side just ruins it, so this is welcome news for professionals that rely on extra monitors, printers, scanners, and other specialized gear to get the most from their Mac laptop.
The MacBook Pro first launched in 2006 and fifteen years ago computers required a variety of different ports, since the standards weren’t as refined. Whereas USB-C is nearly universal now, the connection options in earlier years ranged from Ethernet to USB-A, optical and Firewire, among others. While many of these ports might go unused, it was nice to have the option of an easy connection. The newer models dropped this down to just a couple of USB-C ports and one is needed for charging, severely limiting what can be connected.
Apple’s latest M1 Pro MacBook Pro brings back the missing ports that are still relevant today. An HDMI port expands the range of monitors that can easily be used with a MacBook Pro, something that is very important when using a laptop as an all-around computer that doubles as a desktop. Thunderbolt displays are more common than before, but that was a limiting factor on recent models. Thunderbolt ports haven’t gone away, of course, and Apple has added even more compared to the M1 MacBook Pro, with three USB 4 ports that are also compatible with the new Thunderbolt 4 standard. An SDXC card port makes it easy to transfer photos and videos from a DSLR or security camera. The headphone jack is back as well which is convenient for when headphones are needed and the AirPods are charging.
MacBook Pro Display Support & MagSafe Charging
With the expanded expansion ports of the new MacBook Pro and extra graphics power that comes with Apple’s latest M1 Pro chip, more than one external display can be connected. For MacBook Pro models configured with the M1 Pro chip, two external monitors are supported, while the M1 Max chip can handle up to four external monitors in addition to the Super Retina XDR mini-LED display that comes with Apple’s latest laptops.
MagSafe is back for the MacBook Pro after being removed several years ago. In the new version, it’s smaller but works in the same way. Using magnets to align and hold the cord securely, the power cord disconnects if yanked or tripped over. This isn’t an exciting technology, but one of those little details that make a difference. Overall, the new M1 Pro MacBook Pro adds several exciting advancements moving Apple Silicon to the next level and also brings back a full complement of ports to make it easier to get peripheral devices connected.
