It’s another day, which means it’s time for another Motorola phone! The latest one to hit the scene is the Moto G Power (2022). Here’s a closer look.

New Moto G Power (2022) Is A $199 Phone With 90Hz Display & 3Day Battery

Having apparently not released enough smartphones this year, Motorola just announced the Moto G Power (2022) as its latest budget entry for the U.S. market. Motorola’s picked up a tendency to be one of the most active smartphone manufacturers. Not including the new G Power, the company launched six smartphones in the U.S. alone and 30 across all of its markets just in 2021. That’s a lot.

Virtually all of these phones are focused on the low and mid-range niches. Motorola occasionally dabbles with premium options, but the majority of its time is spent with affordable handsets. This is especially true with Motorola’s 2021 lineup for the United States. Outside of the Motorola Edge (2021) — a mid-tier device that retails for $699 — all of its other phones this year have been in the Moto G family. And with the Moto G Power (2022), it’s growing once more.

Similar to other entries in the G Power series, the big draw to the Moto G Power (2022) is its 5,000 mAh battery. Motorola says that’s enough for up to three days of use per charge, with the G Power (2022) capable of up to 110 hours of music listening, 18 hours of video, or 17 hours of social media use. That’s undoubtedly a compelling offer, but it’s also the exact same pitch behind the Moto G Power (2021) — a phone that launched in January. Motorola’s tendency to release a new phone every other week isn’t surprising these days, but to have two updates to the same phone in one year is a new record.

Moto G Power (2022) Specs & Price

While the battery situation is the same for the new Moto G Power, it does have some notable spec differences compared to its predecessor. Instead of a low-end Qualcomm chip, the Moto G Power (2022) features a MediaTek Helio G37. It’s the second Moto phone in the U.S. this year to ship with a MediaTek chipset, suggesting Motorola may be quickly shifting away from Qualcomm for its budget devices. The Moto G Power (2022) also touts a 6.5-inch HD+ display, 90Hz refresh rate, 50MP rear camera, and an IP52 dust/water resistance rating. Like so many other Motorola phones, charging is still limited to just 10W and there’s no NFC. That last point wasn’t a deal-breaker a few years ago, but with 2022 right around the corner, shipping a phone without NFC at any price is a bit ridiculous.

Speaking of ridiculous, there’s the update situation for the Moto G Power (2022). This is a point of contention for nearly every Moto phone, and without skipping a beat, Motorola made sure to keep the tradition going. The Moto G Power (2022) ships with Android 11 out of the box — an operating system that launched in September 2020. It’ll be updated to Android 12 at some point, but that’s the only update you’ll ever get on the G Power (2022). The one-update situation is the worst aspect of any Moto phone these days, but it feels especially crummy when that update is used to get a phone off outdated software.

Those complaints aside, the Moto G Power (2022) could be a decent option for someone who needs a smartphone and can’t break the bank. It’ll be available “in the coming months” at Republic Wireless and Metro by T-Mobile, followed by Verizon, AT&T, Xfinity Mobile, Boost Mobile, Cricket, US Cellular, and Google Fi later on. If you want to buy the phone unlocked, it’ll be available at Amazon, Best Buy, and Motorola’s website in early 2022. Retail pricing is set at $199 and $249 for 64GB and 128GB of storage, respectively.
