New Pokémon Snap Looks Exactly How Sword & Shield Should Have

The world is finally receiving a new Pokémon Snap and it has had the unexpected side effect of showing up the mainline entries in the series by looking way better than the latest games.

The reveal of the Nintendo Switch was exciting to Pokémon fans around the world, as the hybrid nature of the console meant that the mainline Pokémon games would finally be coming to a home console. Game Freak had always held-off on bringing the mainline Pokémon games to a Nintendo console, even during the Pokémania boom, as it believed that the social elements of the game were of paramount importance. The Switch meant that this excuse was no longer valid, and fans were excited to see what Game Freak would come up with, now that the Pokémon series was coming to a system that far outstripped the Nintendo 3DS in terms of power.

Pokémon Sword & Shield turned out to be major disappointments in the graphical department. The games came under fire from day one, with people pointing out that the Pokémon character models had been reused from the 3DS games, while many textures were muddy and wouldn’t have looked out of place in a PS2 game. The trees in the Wild Area also came under fire, due to how poor they looked up close. The shoddy visuals, combined with cutting the National Dex and a number of glitches present in the games at launch meant that Pokémon Sword & Shield were heavily criticized by the fans. These complaints didn’t stop the games from selling over seventeen million copies, but they did color the discourse surrounding the game for a long time.

The debate regarding the graphical quality of Pokémon Sword & Shield recently returned, when the trailer for New Pokémon Snap was revealed to the world for the first time. The trailer clarified that the footage of New Pokémon Snap was of a development build, but the visuals were far more impressive than anything seen in Pokémon Sword & Shield. The fact that the game is being developed by Bandai Namco led to renewed criticism of Game Freak, as many people felt they messed up Pokémon Sword & Shield and prioritized getting a mainline Pokémon game out on the Switch as quickly as possible over creating a quality product.

It bears mentioning that the reason why New Pokémon Snap’s visuals look so much more impressive than Pokémon Sword & Shield’s is that they can be. New Pokémon Snap is essentially a rail shooter with a camera, which means that the player will move on a predetermined path and can only take pictures within a controlled environment. If New Pokémon Snap is anything like its predecessor, then the game won’t be anywhere near as in-depth as a full Pokémon title. As such, Bandai Namco can afford to make the Pokémon and world look impressive, as the player won’t interact with them as much.

The visuals in Pokémon Sword & Shield are a letdown and the graphical quirks (like time stopping whenever the player climbs a ladder) are rookie mistakes that aren’t befitting the developers of one of the biggest video game series of all time. A Pokémon game with triple-A visuals would have been incredible, yet Game Freak knows that the bare minimum will get them by, which has been proven by the incredible sales figures of Pokémon Sword & Shield.
